Great post, @chloroform! I learned so much new stuff about sharks from this. I had no idea that the great white sharks needed 27-33 years to reach sexual maturity. That's actually pretty crazy, and a good argument against all the shark killing we are seeing so much of these days.
Well, previously they thought that a great white shark could achieve sexual maturity in 15 years, but then again, that's when they assumed the lifespan of this creature was 30 years. The long duration which is required for them to sexually mature plus with the low reproduction rate has made this creature threatened with extinction.
