Music Science (Why do songs stuck into our heads?)

From the moment i woke up this morning I can’t get this song out of my head.

NO,NO,NO.

I won’t tell you the song.

Not yet..at least.

So while I was singing this stuck song,I wondered why is this happening to me.So,I did a little research and I found some really interesting stuff that I thought it would be nice to share with you guys today.

Why do songs get stuck in our heads all of the time? 

Experts say the culprits are earworms. No, don’t be afraid of any parasites crawling into your ear,laying musical eggs in your brain.Think of them more like parasitic in the sense that they get lodged in your head and cause a sort of "brain itch”.In other words, a need to fill in the gaps your head is creating and can only be covered with songs rhythm.

When you listen to a song, it triggers a part of the brain called the auditory cortex. Researchers at Dartmouth University found that when they played part of a familiar song to research subjects, the participants' auditory cortex automatically filled in the rest -- in other words, their brains kept "singing" long after the song had ended [source: Prokhorov].

Many researchers say songs that stuck in your head are like thoughts we're trying to suppress.

Which songs stuck?

Those that have repetitive notes or unexpected intervals in timing,distinctive rhythm and pitch patterns.

Conclusion:

“For a song to get stuck into your head it needs to be quite simple. In order to be recalled spontaneously.(sounds right,since I have never run into someone singing Mozart’s music on the street) Also,it needs to have something unique that makes the brain want to rehearse it over and over," says Kelly Jakubowski, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Music at Durham University in the U.K.

The more musical you are, the more earworms you are likely to experience,according to research.

People are more likely to pick up an earworm when they are doing something routine, like jogging or chores.
