Why is the caterpillar of the southern flannel moth (Megalopyge opercularis) considered dangerous?

Lepidopterans insects go through a transformation process known as Holometabolism (shown in a previous post), in which there are four distinct stages (egg, larvae, pupa, and adult).

In the larval stage, the Lepidopterans are caterpillars whose main function is to feed, grow and develop to prepare for the Metamorphosis. Apparently, during this stage, the caterpillars are totally harmless and have very striking colors and shapes. They only represent damage to the plant from which they feed. However, not all caterpillars meet this condition.

In this publication, we will expose the case of the caterpillar of the moth Megalopyge opercularis, which is considered one of the most dangerous that exist. Let's see why!

In the following image, you can see the flannel moth or by its scientific name Megalopyge opercularis. This small insect can be found in the south of the United States, as well as in southeast Florida and Virginia, Mexico and in some places in Central America.

Its caterpillar is known as a puss caterpillar because of its appearance since it is covered with a kind of fur similar to that of a Persian cat. In the following images, you can see.

Beneath that hairy, tender and silky appearance there is a series of toxic spines that stick in your skin causing a very strong pain. Let's see this little fluff moving.

In its lower part, it has a group of legs that allow it to have the grip to go up and down the trunks of the trees. Her mouth is at the end of the head which allows her to gnaw the leaves.

I must warn, dear reader, that this caterpillar does not need to be provoked to sting, it is only necessary to touch it so that its defense mechanism is activated and injected her venom.

Its venom is so aggressive that it causes more pain than it does when we are attacked by a wasp, a scorpion or a jellyfish or equal to the pain we feel when a bone fractures. In addition, the pain is not only felt in the area of the sting but also radiates to other parts of the body. So you know dear reader, if you find one of them, stay away!

In addition to acute and stabbing pain that can last about an hour, there is also a rash with a burning sensation in the area of the sting which disappears after 1 day. In more sensitive people, other symptoms may appear such as a headache, abdominal pain, nausea, respiratory distress, and erythematous spots that can last up to 12 hours.

According to experts in the field, so far no cases of contact with this caterpillar that has resulted in death have been reported.

They recommend using adhesive tape to remove the spines and in this way relieve pain. They also recommend the use of ice placed in the sting and if symptoms worsen seek medical help.
