GOOD NEWS FOR FAULTY KIDNEYS:NEW INVENTION SET TO HELP MANY.

in #steemstem7 years ago (edited)

Good morning Steemians. I stumbled on a news this past week and was glad that technology has provided another outstanding innovation in having to help a lot of people who might be suffering from kidney failures to be able to have hope again.

IMPORTANCE OF THE KIDNEYS
The kidneys are one of the most important organs in the human body. They are a pair of bean shaped organs found at the back of the abdominal cavity just below the ribs behind the stomach. Each kidney is connected to the bladder by a tube called the ureter which transports urine by which it produces.

The kidneys functions to keep the body in a state of equilibrium such functions include homeostasis, acid-base balance, regulation of osmolality, blood pressure regulation, hormone secretion via the following mechanism of the kidney which includes filtration which is the the process by which cells and large proteins are filtered from the blood to make an ultafiltrate that eventually becomes urine and is passed out; resorption and secretion which occurs simultaneously with filtration to bring about the end product.

All these together keeps the kidneys functioning well but once they get attacked my infections which leads to diseases and not properly treated or managed, it leads to kidney failure.

A GREAT MEDICAL INVENTION/INTERVENTION
Over the years, the dialysis machine which was invented by a Dutch physician, Dr Willem Kolff in 1943 has been a tremendous help in managing patients with kidney failures but it is just a make shift plan and the definitive treatment for such patients would have to be a kidney transplant. As a matter of fact, the National Kidney Foundation estimates that over 100,000 patients are on the waiting list for a donor kidney, and over 3,000 are added list each year. The average patient spends 3.6 years waiting for a viable transplant, and may be treated with dialysis while they wait, but only one in three dialysis patient survives longer than five years without a transplant.G1.jpg

It's one thing to get a kidney donor either deceased or living and another for such to match the recipients system without any tissue rejection because such transplanted organs have to be matched properly to exclude rejection which can lead to severe consequences which eventually leads to death in the shortest of time. Interestingly, to address this unmet need and reduce the rate at which patients with kidney failures have to wait endlessly before getting a viable transplant, two outstanding people and their team in the person of William H. Diesel, a neurologist and associate professor of medicine from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville Tennessee, USA and Shuvo Roy from the University of California have brought about an implantable artificial kidney which they believe will give hope to the millions suffering from kidney failure and who are on dialysis.

HOW IT WILL WORK
This world’s first bionic kidney can be inserted in a body by a common surgical procedure and it has proved to work efficiently. It is now proving to be the perfect replacement for a damaged kidney. The bionic kidney consists of several microchips which is moved by the heart. The bionic kidney also filters out toxins from the blood in the same way as a normal kidney.

It is a microchip made in nanotechnology. Each kidney will have 15 microchips built one atop the other. They will act as filters, and they will hold living renal cells which will find its way to grow around those microchips. They will mimic the real kidney.

Well, the primary goal is a steady blood flow through the device. Engineers are working and testing every single detail of this device to make sure that the device can safely let the blood flow through it without clotting or damage anything.

So far, this solution has proven to be much better than a transplant from a human donor. The rejection factor has been zero! The newest invention with renal cells is something completely new, and the prototype is the size of a coffee cup. It does everything just like the healthy kidney, and it even regulates the blood pressure, it filters all the toxins (like medications and food supplements).

HOW TO PREVENT KIDNEY DISEASE.
The above invention is a huge plus to the medical world and its a very welcomed development, however it important we take good care of our kidneys as prevention is better than cure. The following are ways to have healthy kidneys.

1)Keep fit and active. Always exercise your body no matter the kind of work you do. Being fit js not necessarily being slim or underweight, it's having all the muscles and bones as well as systems in your body in a good state and exercising helps achieve that.

2)Keep regular control of your blood sugar level. Watch what you eat or consume especial junk food. Eat healthy to prevent disease like diabetics which is a major culprit for kidney disease.

3)Monitor your blood pressure. The normal blood pressure is usually at the range of 120/80 ,anything above it could pose a problem. It's important we do regular check ups with our physicians.

4)Eat healthy and keep your weight in check. Reduce your salt intake which helps to prevent diabetics, heart diseases and any others.

5)Maintain a healthy fluid intake. Rather than drink lots of carbonated drinks and acidic drinks, drink lots of water. Drinking at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day keeps our kidneys properly perused daily.

6)Do not smoke nor take too much alcohol drinks. These lessens the amount of blood that get to the kidneys thereby affecting it's efficiency.

7)Do not take drugs without your doctors prescription. It's important one does t just take any drug for self medication. Always consult with your doctor before swallowing any medication.

CONCLUSION
Hopefully, it is said that this new invention is likely to replace the dialysis machine in the next two to three years and of course that would begin from advanced countries but its affordability and availability will also tell if people who might need to access it would be able to go for it. When it comes to anything that can improve health, people won't mind the cost after all health is wealth.

I'd also love to use this medium to invite as many people as possible to the first ever steemit clinic called #AIR-CLINIC. The Air-Clinic is a work in progress and that progress is taking us to places. We must quickly point out that we are not in competition with any project or community because we are on our own lane. We are reaching out to everyone as much as possible to work with us.

All communities should endeavour to encourage their members to come and get free health tips. You never can tell where your knowledge may help you tomorrow. You may save even your own life in the process. So, never you turn down an opportunity to learn new things.

You really worked on this article. That's good news for the world, although I fear it will be an expensive "gadget". Voted and resteemed.

Thanks bro @akintunde. True though, well for people who can afford it hoping as time goes on many others would be able to. I appreciate you

Wow... You really took alot of time to research and make this post available. I love your content dear... Keep it up @thelovejunkie

Thank you @samuelwealth. Thanks for always stopping by

This is a very informative post.

it is said that this new invention is likely to replace the dialysis machine in the next two to three years and of course that would begin from advanced countries but its affordability and availability will also tell if people who might need to access it would be able to go for it.

This is the problem if most people will not be able to access it.

Hey @thelovejunkie thats a good one. I hope The BIONIC KIDNEYS work fine because renal impairments is really killing a lot of very nice people. Thanks for putting in word about #air-clinic. Though I expect you to make a full-blown post about it.

100% upvoted.

Cheers!

Thanks my #AIR-CLINIC boss. I appreciate you. Sure I a working on it, soon it will drop 😀 @nairadaddy

Good research i believe this will not have any side effect.
