CLIMATE CHANGE LESSON 1

Introduction

The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. In the last 700,000 years there have been several cycles of glacier advance and retreat. The last 7,000 years ago marks the beginning of the modern climate era and human civilization. Most of this climate changes are as a result of variations in Earth's orbit that changes the amount of solar energy our planet Earth receives.

What is climate change?

Climate change can be simply put as the change in statistical distribution of weather patterns over an extended period of time (i.e., decades to millions of years). Climate change can also be defined as the rise in the average surface temperature on Earth, mostly due to the burning of fossils.

Is Climate change real?

The president of the United states, Donald J. Trump, in 2012 posted on his Twitter page that Climate change is just an hoax created by and for the Chinese in order to make the United states manufacturing non-competitive. The president was criticized by many for this unambiguous statement. Just few years later, the United states, Environmental Protection Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration concur that Climate change is indeed occurring and is almost certainly due to human activity.
