If you're like most of our readers, that likely read articles on a broken screen of mobile device (phone or tablet).
This kind of annoyance soon will be a thing of the past, thanks to a team of Japanese scientists who have developed a brand new type of "self-healing" glass that can literally merge, simply by pressure.

This self-healing polymer , created by researchers at the University of Tokyo in Japan.
A student at the University of Tokyo, Yu Yanagisawa , was working on the development of a new adhesive when, by accident, he obtained a result very different from his initial goal.

Yanagisaw inadvertently cut the low molecularpressure polymer he worked with. However, it did not take him long to notice that the broken material returned to join the shortly after, if kept under light pressure.
Yu Yanagisawa, decided to conduct a series of follow-up experiments to confirm that the self-healing glass actually worked. According to the team, this glass is physically achievable thanks to a low-mass polymer called "polyether-thiourea" , which uses the thiourea compound to increase the hydrogen bonding capacity in the material when it is cut or broken.
Unlike other polymers, which also have the ability to self-repair, this new material does not need high temperatures for the reconstructive process to take place. Until now, a temperature of approximately 120 ° C was necessary to reorganize its structure.

We just need our fingers and 30 seconds to rebuild the screen of our device

On the other hand, the glass that is made with this new material can be repaired by pressing with the fingers (at a temperature of approximately 21 º C) the broken pieces for a few seconds, recovering its original strength after a few hours .
Expanding the range of materials that can be repaired is a major challenge for sustainable societies . High molecular weight non- crystallinepolymers generally form mechanically robust materials, which, however, are difficult to fix once they are fractured.

What also makes this glass unique is that it exerts its self-healing function at room temperature, while other materials of the same type often require an increase in temperature to induce the desired bonding behavior. In addition, the material also manages to "glue back" faster than any other previously developed material.

One of these materials, unveiled by California researchers earlier this year, has also been touted as a potential replacement for fragile mobile phone displays. But in this case of the, it takes about a whole day (24hrs) for it to self-repair.
" The high mechanical strength and the healing capacity tend to be mutually exclusive. In most cases, high temperatures - of the order of 120 ° C - have to be reached before the fractured portions can be repaired .

But in the case of this new material, the repair is therefore carried out at room temperature and a simple finger pressure for thirty seconds is largely sufficient.

The applications that this type of polymer can have cover a wide range of possibilities. One of the closest and immediate utilities is in the technology that we use every day: this glass has the capacity to be used for different electronic devices, such as the screens of our phones or other fragile devices .

As a general rule, the repairs of these crystals have always been quite expensive, and the protectors must be changed regularly whenever they suffer a fracture. Therefore, this discovery seems to be a great solution to the problem of the screens of phones .

Apart from the telephone screens, another area for which self-healing materials could be very useful, is that of medicine. Currently, researchers hope that the accidental discovery can " lead to a new, innovative and environmentally friendly material that avoids being thrown out if it is broken
Materials such as self-healing rubber had already been developed , but scientists say that it is the first time that a hard substance is created that can be reconstituted at room temperature
It is the first time that a hard substance is created that can be recomposed at room temperature.

I still do wonder why the screen of phones MUST be made from "breakable glass".... There are several other options ,well maybe its the manufacturers way of getting more money

@poeticlee, at least it would end soon since there has been discovery
