Different Areas of Neuroscience

People often assume that I have advanced knowledge in any particular area of neuroscience. "Neuroscience" is a balloon phrase that speaks for many disciplines. While I have taken courses in anatomy, microbiology, genetics, etc., I cannot resist my preference for neurophysiology and cognitive neuroscience (both in which pertain more to function rather than structure). I think I am going to do a series on both and posting it here. Also, I do take interest in neural networks, and would like to post some illustrations in the future.

For those of you wondering, there are several branches of neuroscience. Here are some, roughly defined, just to name a few:

Neuroanatomy: study of anatomical structures of the nervous system; these structures in vertebrates being the brain, spinal chord (CNS), and nerves that disperse throughout the rest of the body (PNS).

Neuropharmacology: study of drug affects on the nervous system on a molecular level as well as a behavioral level.

Neurophysiology: study of nervous system functioning, generally in electro-graphic terms.

Behavioral Neuroscience: study pertaining to biological processes and how they relate or influence mental processes, influencing behavior.

Developmental Neuroscience: study of brain development with a focus on underlying mechanisms on a molecular basis.

Computational Neuroscience: an up and coming area of research that pertains to information processing functions of the nervous system with the integration of computer processing. Very fascinating imo.

Neurology: basically, the study of diseases of the nervous system. I may do a series on this as well.

Cognitive Neuroscience: study of biological substrates underlying cognition and mental processes.
