RE: Food chemistry Vol 8 : Are fruit sugars harmful for our body? The difference between natural and additional sugars!!

in #steemstem6 years ago

I would be interested to know if coconut sugar is actually better for you than table sugar. I've heard opposing views on this.

Sort:

My father bought some day biological coconut sugar. in terms of everything is as @zkalemiss told you, the only difference is the glycemic index which was lower than table's sugar but in general it differ from person to person so it's not something that adds great value. in terms of taste it was better from the table sugar. I made pancakes with it :p

Wouldn't the lower glycemic table make it a healthier choice? This was my understanding.

so what is really happening is that the ''proofs'' are not sufficient. only a study had be done by the Philippine department of agriculture that is showing that the GI is 35 while i think the average of table sugar is 60 but the department didn't compare it with the table sugar but with glucose :P Also the GI of every human being is different so even 35 can be a lot. Different as well can be the product of coconut sugar and the way they made it so again the GI can be a lot higher.

Finally in america in terms of people that face diabetes they don't even bother with the GI and according to the American Diabetes Association in the process of making the coconut sugar they sometimes add fructose etc etc increasing the GI :)

basically the differences are mostly none. as i said in terms of taste it is really good but if you wanna replace sugar with it, that's not the best option. i hope i helped you!

hello @rebeccamorgan, my opinion is that all sugars are harmful for our health. Even those that coming from fruits. Cococut sugar contains a lot of important nutrients but in very small quantities so if you want these nutrients to benefit your body, you have to eat big quantities. Table sugar and coconut sugar have the same calories. In conclusion I think that coconut sugar is not better than table sugar but if you like it you can consume it in logical quantities like any other sugars.

Interesting. I don't eat a lot of sugar, but thought maybe if a person were to eat sugar than they would be better off with coconut...

Wouldn't the lower glycemic table make it a healthier choice? This was my understanding.
