WHY ARE AIRPLANES PAINTED WHITE???????
Ever wondered why airplanes are white in color?
How comfy has life been with air transport? just book your flight ticket and within minutes or hours you can be in an entirely different place or country. That’s how fast air transport can be. But in the cause of your journey, have you ever thought or questioned why airplanes are always painted with white color? I guess NO is the answer.
Here we have some facts and discoveries which will interest you.
Firstly, white is a Unique and Evergreen color.
The picture below is of a TWA L1011 passenger airplane which has been in a hanger for more than 10 years. My point is that, usually dark colors fade away easily but white colors takes time before wearing off. Dark colors wear off when exposed often to sunlight and when we talk about traveling in the air, we are talking about 30,000 ft. above ground level which in turn means more proximity with the UV radiations. White colors are easy to maintain and clean off, also it looks better than other colors when worn off.
Using Other Colors Tends To Be More Operational Regarding Cost.
It is a fact that the more colors you want in your painting the more will be the operational cost for it. Painting a plane may range from $50k to $200k. It is evident you see that the more you want something to look attractive, you will have to spend more amount for the same.
White has extreme thermal advantages.
Science suggests that other colors absorb more wavelengths of light and thus make the object warmer quicker, but white reflects all other wavelengths of light, and so the light is not converted into heat. Additionally due to this thermal advantage of white color, the airplane cabins are slightly cooler!
White is more 'visible'.
A very general reason is the visibility factor of white. White color is very visible no matter the angle or point where you are looking at it. A dark spot of badly eaten tomato soup can be easily visible on white jeans. Right? Similarly, any corrosion, cracks, fissures can be easily spotted on a plane that is colored white. White can be easily spotted in the sky as well as on the ground.
White has the least resale value.
If an airplane is painted in a color other than white, it may affect its resale value in the future. Owners will have to repaint the airplane before selling it. But with white, merely changing the company name and logo would works easily. Thus, white is more economical compared to other colors.
The advantage with lease terms and conditions.
It is surprising, but most of the airline companies don't own any aircraft. Most of the passenger airplanes are leased by big airplane leasing companies, and so it is easier to lease a standard white airplane and then just change its logo than when its painted with a different color entirely.
