It's so weird, it's like the young mushrooms evolved to be cuter, transforming into ugly adulthood later, as if that's a necessary survival tool. Ever the fascinating post once again!
The questions behind the evolutionary benefits of several mushroom traits - looks, poisonous, bitterness - are myriad. The sheer diversity of the kingdom leaves a host of wildly different mushrooms growing in close proximity to each other, each with extremely specific traits. It all feels totally random to me, but i'm sure people far more qualified have investigated more completely.
