Definition of computer network

For all users of computers, this term is perhaps one of the most read, but as you will surely appreciate, it is also one of the most assertions it deserves, since it is used equally for connections between computers, as well as for connections between computers. users, having in common that they agree to arrange a Network.

A network is just a communication system that is given between different teams to be able to carry out an efficient, fast and accurate communication, for the transmission of data from one computer to another, then carrying out an Information Exchange (remembering that an Information is a set ordered data) and also sharing resources available on the computer.

The network must be formed unfailingly by a Terminal (the starting point of the communication) or a Node that allows the connection, and essentially the Transmission Medium, which is essentially defined by the connection that is carried out between said equipment.

This connection can be made directly, using all types of cables, or using electromagnetic waves, present in wireless technologies, which require a specific adapter for this communication, which can be included in the equipment or connected to the equipment.

It is defined as Terminal to all types of equipment that is as Emitter or Receiver in the established communication, not being a computer, but it can also be a Peripheral connected to a Network (as it is in the case of a Printer or a Monitor, Exit peripherals) or a terminal exclusively dedicated to perform a certain function, such as a Videoconference Terminal.

The network that can be said is the best known or used is the LAN (Local Area Network), which can be defined as a group of computers and associated devices that share a common line of communication or a wireless link with a server . Typically, a LAN encompasses computers and peripherals connected to a server within a different geographical area, such as an office or a commercial establishment. Computers and other mobile devices use a LAN connection to share resources such as a printer or network storage.

Ethernet and Wi-Fi are the two main ways to enable LAN connections. Ethernet is a specification that allows computers to communicate with each other. Wi-Fi uses radio waves to connect computers to the LAN. Other LAN technologies, including Token Ring, Fiber Distributed Data Interface and ARCNET, have lost votes as Ethernet and Wi-Fi speeds have increased. The increase in virtualization has driven the development of virtual LANs, allowing network administrators to logically group network nodes and partition their networks without major infrastructure changes.

The other two types of existing network are:

  • MAN:  Metropolitan Area Network: In this type of networks the extension is much larger, covering a city or a small specific population.
  • WAN:- Wide Area Network: In this case the networks are between entire countries or can even reach a continental extension
