WHAT IS MESOTHELIOMA?
Mesothelioma refers to a form of cancer that occurs from the thin layer of skin-layer that forms a covering over several internal organs such as the heart, lungs, abdomen, etc.
WHAT CAUSES MESOTHELIOMA?
Majority of the various Individuals who have developed Mesothelioma id so as a result of exposure to asbestos. Individuals who live in area where asbestos occur naturally have an higher tendency of developing mesothelioma when compared with individuals who do not live in regions where asbestos are absent. The soil in these areas will most likely contain asbestos and the inhabitants might used such soil in building their houses hence completely surrounding themselves with asbestos and increasing their probability of having Mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma can also be caused as a result of exposure to Erionite, a zeolite mineral with similar properties to asbestos.
In rare cases, Mesothelioma can be developed as a result of irradiation of the chest or the abdomen.
TYPES OF MESOTHELIOMA
Types of Mesothelioma are based on the type of cells the tumour originated from. There are two major types and they are:
- Pleural Mesothelioma: This is a type of cancer which originates at the layer of tissues that cover the lungs.

SYMPTOMS OF PLEURAL MESOTHELIOMA
Fatigue
Loss of weight
Persistent coughing
An husky voice
Chest pain
Loss of appetite, et cetera.
- Peritoneal Mesothelioma: This is a type of cancer which originates in the tissues which line the inside of the abdomen.

SYMPTOMS OF PERITONEAL MESOTHELIOMA
Pain in the abdomen
Swelling in the abdomen
Poor appetite
Diarrhoea et cetera.
TREATMENT OF MESOTHELIOMA
CHEMOTHERAPHY: This employs the use of anti-cancer cells to destroy the cancer cells.
RADIOTHERAPHY: This employs high energy waves in the destruction of the cancer cells.
SURGERY: This is a process which removes the cancer cells through a surgical process, thus controlling the symptoms and improving the patient's quality of life.
