LONGITUDE

Good afternoon my steamians friend, hope your activity Run smoothly and always get healthy.
For today, I'm going to explain to you all about Longitude, the explanation and an Example of Longitude.
Longitude is the angle between the vertical plane of Greenwich Meridian and the vertical plane of any point on earth.

POLE AXIS
The axis line that cross centre of earth/sphere.
Identified by North and South pole.

GREAT CIRCLE
Complete vertical circle along the maximum diameter of sphere.
Must be passing through the North and South pole.

MERIDIAN
Half vertical of Great Circle.
Must be passing through the North and South pole.

MERIDIAN GREENWICH
Meridian that passing through the Greenwich Town in England.
This point is stated as the origin of meridian (0°).

EAST & WEST
Longitude must be located at either in the EAST or WEST from Greenwich Meridian.

EAST & WEST (ANNOTATION)
Longitude for the meridian x° that located at the EAST of Greenwich Meridian is identified by x° E.
Longitude for the meridian x° that located at the WEST of Greenwich Meridian is identified by x° W.

THE DATE LINE
Longitude that overlaps at 180° W and 180° E.
This longitude is referring to the same meridian.

ANNOTATION
Longitude/Latitude can be annotated as follows :

IDENTIFICATION OF LONGITUDE
QUESTION 1
From the diagram, the longitude of point E is 52E. Find the longitude for :-
(a) Point F, given EF is the diameter of earth.
(b) Point Q, given longitude P is 30 7’ W.
SOLUTION
(a). Where is the location of E?
Where is Greenwich Meridian?
We know that EF is diameter of earth.
Therefore, longitude F is at West:
= (180 - 52 )W
= 128W

(b). Where is the location of P?
Where is Greenwich Meridian?
We know that PQ is a Great Circle.
Therefore, longitude Q is at East:
= (180 - 30 7’)W
= 14953’W

Latitude is the horizontal lines that perpendicular to Pole Axis that able to determine any points on earth.
