Why Sprite clean glass well

Hello Steemians! I saw a fact on whatsApp saying if you want your glass to be sparkling clean just use sprite!

As a chemist, I decided to look into it and see the reason/chemistry behind it. I would not bore you with the equations do not worry 😁.

Sprite is a soft drink, colourless and lemon flavoured drink produced by The Coca-Cola Company. It is in a class of carbonated soft drink, except in Australia and New Zealand where it is lemonade.

The definite chemical formula for sprite can only be said by the Coca-Cola company, but we know what Sprite is made of.

There are two ingredients of Sprite that concerns me as regard to why it cleans glass so well; lemon and carbonated water.

Before I continue, let us take a look at what a cleaning agent is.

Cleaning agents are substances that are used to remove dirt, including dust, stains, bad smells, and clutter on surfaces.

Under cleaning agents, acidic cleaning agent comes in. Acidic cleaning agents help in removing inorganic deposits on the surface of a thing intended to be cleaned.

Lemon contains citric acid which is five times the amount present in an orange. Citric acid happens to be an example of an acidic cleaning agent, its presence in Sprite makes Sprite qualified to act as a cleaning agent.

Carbonated water(soda water) is a water in which carbon dioxide gas placed under pressure has been dissolved. Simply put; it is water that has carbon gas injected into it which causes the reaction that makes bubbles appear.

Actually, it has not been proven scientifically as to why soda water cleans glass too. But it had been used on car wind screens and worked out. It is believed that the carbonation helps out.

The lemon is the main reason while Sprite clean glass so well, due to its low pH and also antibacterial properties. It inhibits bacteria too.

Dear Steemians! when someone says that Sprite can clean glass just say yes and say its due to the presence of lemon which contains an acidic cleaning agent (citric acid) like a boss!
