RE: Rediscovering animals with superpowers: The Muhammad Ali of the ocean - Mantis shrimp

in #steemstem6 years ago (edited)

Maybe the source that I consult is wrong, but here it is.

Another remarkable thing about the mantis shrimp’s claw is that it snaps shut so fast that it literally boils the water in it at a temperature of 4,000⁰ C (7,200 ⁰ F). This creates a sonic shock wave as the bubble expands and a second as it collapses an instant later. This shock wave is so strong that it stun or kill small prey at short distances.
Shockwave - source

However, pistol shrimp, do "stun" their prey through cavitation.

Yes, the general principle is that the force of the blow creates a kind of cavitation effect, but it also resembles that of a shock wave.

Sort:

The article is kind of misleading... It does say small prey but it doesn't give an actual size as to what small is. This "stun" would take place in prey that is a bit smaller than them which is typically not a go-to target from what my professors and I have observed.

Yes, the article is a bit confusing and maybe as I am not an expert in the subject I have misunderstood it; however thanks for the clarification.

I really appreciate the comment. It is always positive to receive the opinion of someone with more knowledge in the subject.
