Wi-Fi Allergies (EHS) - Can you really be allergic to WiFi?

in #steemstem7 years ago (edited)

Technology is getting better and better at 'fooling' our minds/senses, and in the near future, Technology will do 'things' we never thought were possible. Even Today, computers and machines are taking over humans, We are surely entering a new technological revolution, Thanks to Today's Technology, we were able to make autonomous vehicles and machines that can function without being told what to do, Nanobots that are so small to the point that they can be injected into your bloodstream to fight diseases or seek and destroy cancer cells, Even virtual assistants 'such as Siri' -which I don’t want to talk to them. I wonder how the future might look like -AI scientists, Internet for everyone... Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Let's save it for another article.

Today, we live in a world that's as connected as it has ever been, a world where wires and cables are everywhere, so we made Wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, But it seems that Wi-Fi allergies are being reported widely between individuals.

What's Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity -which a lot of people don't  know-, Wireless Fidelity is a technology that uses radio waves to provide connectivity between a machine and a router.

How does Wi-Fi work?

You are probably connected to Wi-Fi right now which enable you to read this post.

Have you ever thought about how it actually works?

Just like radios, televisions and cell phones,  Unlike Ethernet that uses electrical signals through wires to transmit data, Wi-Fi uses radio waves to send data 'back and forth' to your computer from the router through the air, Wi-fi signals are transmitted at a certain frequency 2.4 GHz/5 GHz.

Wi-fi uses a protocol called TCP/IP,  For example: If you want to send this post through Wi-Fi, This article must be broken down into small packets , these tiny packets are sent to another computer through Wi-fi , These small pieces are then reassembled to form the post you are reading right now, of course it's a bit more complicated but you get the point.

So Can You Be Allergic to WiFi?

On Better Call Saul -The Breaking Bad spin-off, the character Chuck McGill frequently wraps himself in a space blanket to protect his body from radio waves emitted from phones and computers, 'claiming' that these waves sicken him. This case is known as EHS or electromagnetic hypersensitivity.

EHS's symptoms can vary a lot, these symptoms include some of the following: tiredness, depression, sleep disturbance, restlessness, frequent-infections, impaired-balance,tinnitus,forgetfulness,hearing loss,headaches,irritability,learning-difficulties,giddiness,joint pains numbness, concentration problems,tingling-sensations,blood pressure changes and eye-problems.

However, according to the 2009 study below, a group of people claiming EHS were exposed to electromagnetic signals without being told when the signals were turned on or off, the study shows that -thankfully- participants were unable to determine when the signals were present.

Most scientists and doctors including my professor, Think of it as a phobia -sort of- just like Acrophobia (Fear of heights)  It's triggered by looking down from a high place, Just like EHS you won't feel the symptoms unless you 'know that there are electromagnetic signals, So according to Science EHS isn't legit.

While researching this subject, I found a website dedicated to those suffering -claiming - from effects from microwave transmitting telecommunications masts to cell-towers. Its called Mast VIctims -U can find it in the links below. I highly recommend reading some of these ''victims" stories, It can really give you an *Inside look* at their claims.

Regardless of whether Wi-Fi "allergies" are real, and according to the nocebo effect -*I will talk about it in a future post*-  true "belief" that you suffer from EHS actually causes symptoms to appear.

Better Call Saul is what brought EHS to my attention, and I did a little more research at that time, as well. I think the most fascinating thing is the lack of scientific proof. I believe people are feeling discomfort or pain, but without science being able to prove a correlation, it makes you question if it's all in the head or if it's something science is behind on and only in the future can it prove a correlation.

The great thing about science is that we can always improve it ,,, we still in early stages of technology so i guess we will wait and see...

Honestly, this be the first time I'm getting to know about EHS. And yeah, scientists are probably right, this whole thing might just be a phobia, just like the fear of heights and what not.

A quick good read. 😃

I'm super sensitive to EMFs. I live in the woods without wifi so when I go somewhere that is thick with i can definitely notice! It becomes harder to concentrate for one.

Many things can explain the feeling of discomfort ,, you should rule out everything first before judging
