This! Exactly this. It's the example I use to illustrate how random processes underlie many of the empirical equations we encounter in engineering - be it diffusion, heat flow, fluid motion, or chemical equilibrium. It provides the 'why' to the statement 'diffusion tends to smooth gradients' and is the reason for the structural similarity between so many of the empirical formulae we use.
