RE: The Scientific Method: a Way to Test Hypothesis and Disprove Misconceptions

in #steemstem7 years ago (edited)

glad to see that you references are old ones, unfortunately it does no longer hold true.
One of my blogs speaks of 40% of all scientists admit that 40% Scientists Say Fraud Causing Crisis of Science

scientific method??? Will science survive decades of fraud?

Sort:

That's not the point of the article. I wasn't trying to prove those theories but to explain how some people have used the scientific method to prove or disprove a hypothesis.
I doubt 40% of all science is fraudulent. If you have an alternative to the scientific method I'd love to hear it.
Thanks for the comment!

nothing wrong to the scientific method but "big money" has hijacked science, the field has been corrupted by special interests and scientists following their paycheck. When seeing the GMOs and chemicals issues for example polluting everything and spreading diseases, it is obvious that something is not working. Chemo being more dangerous than cancer is not the result of the scientific method either. The problem is that people have little interest economics and how it corrupts minds

An article from the Nature.com explained/exposed, if 40% of scientists admit fraud, indeed there is more than 40% of fraudulent science out there

I have many blogs proving that science today is utterly deceptive, just take a peak at it when you get a chance

Your post completely misquotes and misinterpretates the article from Nature.
The original source talks about a problem in reproducibility in science. Those statistics that you quote don't refer to fraudulent publications or corruption in science at all.
There are many problems in the scientific world, including the way scientific journals work and the academic pressure for publications. But discretting science is not going to solve any of them.

nope, I dont misrepresent... 40% of scientists cannot reproduce the the work of others by scientific methods. Read well. Survey sheds light on the ‘crisis’ rocking research.

40% of Scientists Admit Fraud “Always or Often” Contributes to Irreproducible Research Survey sheds light on the ‘crisis’ rocking research

How do you comprehend this headline then?

I know it is a shocker, just get over it sorry if I ruined your day. The scientific method is dead, it appears. Science today has become deadly.

That is how monsanto for example is able to get away with murder and spreading cancer like wildfire

The article published in Nature mentions fraud as one of the potential causes for the lack of reproducibility, but it's not the only one mentioned and not even the most common answer from the survey.
The article specifically says:

The survey asked scientists what led to problems in reproducibility. More than 60% of respondents said that each of two factors — pressure to publish and selective reporting — always or often contributed. More than half pointed to insufficient replication in the lab, poor oversight or low statistical power. A smaller proportion pointed to obstacles such as variability in reagents or the use of specialized techniques that are difficult to repeat.

There are many problems in the scientific world (fraud being one of them in many cases, for sure), but that doesn't mean science is not reliable anymore or that the scientific method is dead. We just have to be cautious with results that have not been verified by multiple sources and we need to find ways to promote and fund replication studies.
You should read the Wikipedia entry for Replication Crisis if you're really interested in this issue.
