World tuberculosis day...creating a public awareness

World Tuberculosis day 24th of march 2018 commemorates each year to raise public awareness about the annihilating and disastrous health, the social and economic repercussions of tuberculosis, and also the procedures to follow in other to put an end to the global epidemic.

Tuberculosis ranks as one of the words contagious disease, which usually affects the lungs, it also ranks as the second largest killer disease in the world.

10.4 million people fell I'll and 1.8 million died in 2015 as a result of this deadly disease.

Robert koch in 1882 discovered the microbic causes of tuberculosis which was after the period when tuberculosis stormed throughout Europe and north america.

Types of tuberculosis

There are two main types of tuberculosis which are the latent and active.

  1. The latent TB: this type of tuberculosis shows no synptoms, neither are they infectious but remain in the body of the individual, but can also become active.

  2. The active tuberculosis: this is the direct opposite of the latent type. It shows symptoms and are highly contagious.

The chance of a latent tuberculosis changing to active is very low, although the risk is much more higher amongst individuals with weak immune systems. For example, those infected with HIV.

Causes of tuberculosis

1.The tuberculosis is caused by the mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium it is an airborne disease, which means it can be spread through air, When a tuberculosis infected person coughs or sneezes.

  1. An individual can easily get affected with Tuberculosis merely by living with a tuberculosis infected person, likes ones family.
Symptoms of an infected person with Tuberculosis.
  • profuse night sweat
  • dry cough
  • tiredness
  • high fever
  • loss of appetite.

Even though tuberculosis is known to mainly as a disease that affects the lungs, it also affects vital organs when proper care Is not taken. For example:

  • destructions of the joints and spinal cord
  • causes inflammation of the the brain also known as meningitis when it affects the brain
  • damages the liver and kidney, thereby leading to blood in urine

Tuberculosis has been curable for so many decades ago but at a time this becomes difficult, and it was observed after careful observations and laboratory test that some antibiotics used could not treat tuberculosis because this antibiotics have become resistant to some strains of antibiotics.

Prevention of tuberculosis

  • Tuberculosis can be prevented from spreading to other people by wearing a face mask by active Tuberculosis patient.

  • it could also be prevented by taking a leave from ones work place for some time, thereby avoiding close interaction with people, in other not to spread the bacteria.
