THE SIDE EFFECT OF MOBILE PHONES TO OUR EYES.

in #steemstem6 years ago

Hello steemains, how has your day been so far? Well mine has been great don't know about yours just hope it has been great as well. I will be giving an informative information about technology and how it affects our lives.

We all know that one way or the other technology today has really affected our lives in one way or the other, in terms of Good and bad sides. But if I should ask a question now "Has technological advancement done more good than harm". Obviously, the answer I will be expecting from almost everyone here will be "more good"which I myself ultimately agree to this fact.

Besides the good it has done, it is important to still know it sides effect to our lives and our health in particular. So with that effect I will be talking on the "SIDES EFFECT OF MOBILE PHONES OUR EYES"

In our world today, most of the scientist who have studied the impact of electromagnetic waves to the human eyes say that mobile phone usage can lead to early cataract in the lens not just to the retina, and ocular system of the eye. A new study carried out by scientist at Charotar University of science and technology(CHARUSAT)revealed that phone usage also affect the eyes. It was explained by "DWIVEDI"

“The wavelength of wireless signals (which is about 2 to 2.5 cm) used for cell phones and other wireless terminals matches with that received by the human eye. The dielectric constant (absorption capacity) of eye tissues is around 70 which is greater than unity (above 50). This means that the eye can absorb electromagnetic energy very quickly,”

The problem is not that the energy absorbed by the eye, but the heat absorbed by the eye which is not emitted or radiated out of the body. Most of the smartphone, computers, tablets and other electronic devices give out light ,and this light are know as "blue violet lights". These lights are toxic and hazardous to the black spot of our eyes and to much of exposure will lead to greater risk of MACULAR DEGENERATIVE and eventually to blindness.

DOES THIS CAUSE A LONG TERM DAMAGE?

Due to the HEV light emitted (also called blue violet lights)by these phones and tablets, staring at them for a longer period of time usually lead to permanent damage of the eyes. The HEV light is an electromagnetic light among the visible light spectrum with the shortest wavelength, that carries the potential of destroying living tissue like the human eye. The High Energy visible light (HEV) is also use in the production of LED bulbs and also emitted by the sun ,but we do not stare at them for a long period of time because the light rays from them are More than that produce by the smartphone and computers.

HOW MUCH TIME DO WE ACTUALLY SPEND ON SCREEN?

The number of hours we spend on the screen also matters. Too much exposure to these screen causes more harm than good to our eyes. A good example ,is the nature of our jobs, as most of us who have job that deals with working with the internet are very much affected as they spend all most their time staring at the screen when making use of their computers or smartphones. "The Vision Council report reveals that a third of adults spend more than 9 hours every day on digital devices, but there are clear generational differences:"

Percentage of population that spends more than 9 hours a day on devices:

26 percent of Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964
32 percent of Gen Xers, born between 1965 and 1980
37.4 percent of Millennials, born between 1981 and 1996

WAYS WE CAN PROTECT OUR EYES

There are various ways we can actually help protect our eyes from getting damage. Some include staying a little bit far from the screen, and so on. Below is a description of how we can protect our eyes given by Dr. Heiting :

  1. Maintain a comfortable working distance at the computer (close to arm’s length from the screen) and avoid hunching closer and closer.

  2. When using a phone keep the screen as far away from your eyes as comfortably possible -- the greater the distance your phone is from your eye, the less eye strain it is likely to cause -- provided the print size and images are large enough for comfortable viewing.

  3. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look off into the distance — at something 20 feet away. This is called the "20-20-20 rule" by many eye care providers, and it relaxes the focusing muscle inside the eye, relaxes the muscles outside the eyes that converge the eyes (points them inward to stay aligned on near objects), and stimulates blinking to remoisten the surface of the eyes — all comforting things!

  4. Get an eye exam. Even minor problems with your eyesight can increase your risk for digital eye strain. Also, ask your eye care professional about the best type of glasses for your digital viewing needs. You might benefit from eyewear specifically prescribed for computer or other digital device use.

  5. Ask your eye care provider about glasses that block blue light. There are a number of brands of eyeglass lenses and coatings that can reduce your exposure to HEV light when using digital devices.

  6. Make sure your eyeglass lenses (if you need them) have an anti-reflective (AR) coating. Eliminating reflections from your lenses can increase viewing comfort and reduce eye strain.

  7. Go outside and play more!

What can I say, the eyes are very important sensitive organ in our body and it must be taken care of. Please do well to take good care of your eyes.
