Taking photos of stars/planets looks complicated--I can't even take good photos of things on this planet! The exposure time makes such a difference though hey? As a morning person, I'd probably fall asleep waiting and fail at that too. :)

That is a really good point, I see a lot of people starting out spending a lot of money on equipment thinking they will do astrophotography and get overwhelmed because there is some complexity to it. In the end, they get frustrated, give up and sell it on the secondhand market for a big loss. The trick is to work up to it.

Having said you know you can take a pretty good photo of the moon with just a smartphone held up to the telescope eyepiece - the trick is holding it perfectly in the right spot. One of my work colleges just got a $45 secondhand telescope and did just that. It might take a few goes to get a good image.

The best images are usually always many hours, over a lot of nights. The good thing though is you don't have to be at the telescope or even awake when the images are being taken.
