This fungal Friday is all about a really bad smell ...
... and some very happy flies ...
... but everything revolves around a mushroom ...

... like the name too, suggests - stinkhorn ...
( Enlargeable )... I mean ... one of the many stinkhorn species ... I don't know which exactly is this one ...
( Enlargeable )... but it stinks ... really bad ... the smell is intense and nauseating ...
... and the flies love it ...
( Enalrgeable )Flies eat the slimy material at the tips of stinkhorn and carry the spores in this slime ... it's a bit like a stinky version of the flower and the bee ...

... and if we add a bit of backlight to emphasize the structure ... stinkhorn can be even beautiful ... but the damn heavy stink always remains ...

Very educational as always. Stinkhorn? I'd never heard of it!
OK, @borjan, that was really disgusting :)) However, I can't control my impulse to learn more about something that is completely new to me. So here's a site I found (maintained by someone who really, really likes mushrooms) MushroomExpert.com, that will tell you just about anything you ever wanted to know about stinkhorn. Apparently these are quite prolific in North America and have a tendency to pop up overnight, even in urban areas.
Fungus...not my thing, but you do have a way of catching and holding my interest. Have a great weekend!

Not complaining... those are gorgeous! I am just glad we cannot teleport fragrances yet :p
