Process for the purification of drinking water

in #steemstem7 years ago

Hello friends of steemit, I want to share with you the importance of the purification of drinking water, and how through a series of steps, it is submitted to eliminate organisms and waste in order that the water is of greater purity and quality and can be consumed without danger. Nowadays it is necessary for us to understand that water is an extremely important resource and a treatment of this is required based on the correct procedures.

There are different steps to follow for the purification of drinking water:

  • Chlorination

  • Filtration through deep bed

  • Filtration through activated carbon

  • Filtration by cartridge

  • Water softening

  • nverse osmosis

  • Rays of ultraviolet light

  • Ozonification of water

  • Chlorination
It is the first `procedure consists of the disinfection of water, in which chlorinated compounds are used, has a germicidal action that eliminates all bacteria, mold, and algae; It also maintains the balance of the population of pathogenic microorganisms that may be found in the water.

  • **Filtration through deep bed **
It is a filtering system that traps the larger particles suspended in the water, remaining in the different layers of sand that have a different thickness in relation to each other.

    SOURCE

  • **Filtration through activated carbon **
It is a filter that contains activated carbon that manages to eliminate any taste or smell of water, as is the case of chlorine or mercury. The passage of water through this filter has to be slow to allow you to remove most of the impurities in the water.

  • Filtration by cartridge
It is the last step by which the water is submitted to achieve its physical polishing, the water passes through a component that contains filter paper with the capacity to retain some possible floating residue in the water of an approximate size of up to 0.22 microns, although in purification plants the typical filtrate is 5 microns. When the cartridge reaches the top due to excess suspended matter, it is only replaced by another one or it can be washed and reused.

  • **Water softenin **
This procedure is carried out in the softener filter and is to eliminate water hardness (high salt content). In this filter resins are used that retain calcium, sodium, and magnesia, these can be natural or artificially created, the solids in suspension (salts) that remain floating above the resin drain and go to drain.

  • Inverse osmosis
Also known as ultra purification in which water is passed at high pressures through a semipermeable membrane that separates the highest salt water and low salt water. The work of the semipermeable membrane is to eliminate most of the total dissolved solids from 95% to 99% and 99% of all bacteria. The water passes through the membrane at high pressure in such a way that the impurities leave behind leaving flowing and continue with its process to the purest water. If necessary, the water is re-polished physically with a filter containing a cartridge capable of retaining up to one micron or less.

    SOURCE

  • Ultraviolet light
Ultraviolet light is used to eradicate bacteria because thanks to the spectrum it offers the possibility of exterminating them, thus sterilizing water.

  • Ozonification of water !
It is used after the water has passed through the ultraviolet rays, it is a gas that is injected into the water directly in combination with the air that, when having contact with the water, carries out the oxidation of the organic and inorganic compounds of this, eliminating and avoiding the formation of algae. The effectiveness of ozone disinfection has to do with the amount used and with time in contact with water.
