The hottest exoplanet has been discovered!

in #steemstem6 years ago (edited)

According to the latest research, the most hot exoplanet we know, is so hot that its atmosphere literally boils. The gas that comes out of it is captured by the star around which this exoplanet is circling.

The hot planet is similar to Jupiter, known to us as KELT-9b, it was first discovered in 2017, circling an extremely hot star called KELT-9. At a temperature of 9726 degrees Celsius, the star is bigger and hotter than our Sun. The KELT-9b exoplanet is incredibly close to its hot star. It circles the KELT-9 star in just 36 hours! KELT-9b is always facing the same side to its star. This causes the exoplanets to warm up to 4300 degrees Celsius! It is a hotter place than many stars. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute in Germany describe KELT-9b as a mythical Icarus who got too close to the Sun. By the action of this high temperature, the atmosphere of this exoplanet evaporates all the time.

KELT-9b is a giant with almost three times the mass of Jupiter and almost twice the diameter. It was first discovered by researchers using the KELT (Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope) telescope at the Winer Observatory in southeastern Arizona, which detects the dips in the star's brightness, which in turn suggests that the exoplanet just obscured the star. Using the CARMENES telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory in Spain, a new study showed that KELT-9b has a surprisingly thick atmosphere, mainly made of hydrogen. This suggests that the star not only warms the atmosphere on the planet, but also uses its gravity to attract hydrogen to itself. Considering the size of the atmosphere of this exoplanet, scientists estimate that it loses gas at over 100,000 tons of hydrogen per second! This star even boils the atmosphere of KELT-9b and draws gas into itself. This is the first such case of interplanetary theft.

That is surprising @astromaniac, who would have thought there will be planets hotter than stars?

I bet this won't be the last :)

Cheers.
