'Science for the curious'. Part 2 - "The Grandfather Paradox; One Of The Most Bizarre Paradoxes!!"

A CASE

Robert hates his grandfather. Robert hates him so much that his ambition is to murder Grandfather in-spite of the fact that his grandfather died in sleep in 1999 .

SOURCE:

He builds a time machine and travels back to the year 1921, a time when his grandfather was a bachelor. When the time is right, Robert locks and barricades the door to avoid any intrusion, and otherwise prevents any factors that might keep him from hitting his target. As Grandfather walks by the room, he is only 6 meters away.

It seems that Robert can kill Grandfather. Every condition is perfect for an instant kill. There is, however, the outstanding fact that Grandfather dies in his bed in 1999. It cannot be that both Robert murders Grandfather in 1921 and Grandfather dies of natural causes in 1999. Since we know Grandfather dies in his sleep in 1999, then it must be the case that Robert does not kill Grandfather in 1921. Now, it seems that Robert can’t kill Grandfather.

This presents us with what looks like a contradiction. According to the conclusions, Robert can kill Grandfather and Robert can’t kill Grandfather. So which is it? Can he or can he not?

ARGUMENT A: ROBERT CAN'T KILL HIS GRANDFATHER

One tempting option is to object to Argument A. Logic being what it is, the universe will not allow a contradiction to be created.
If Robert were to try to kill Grandfather, he would fail. Robert might loose his nerve or he might have missed his chance to kill his grandfather. Robert cannot kill his grandfather. Time travelers “can’t change any past fact whatsoever”.

ARGUMENT B: ROBERT CAN KILL HIS GRANDFATHER

In this case, let us assume all the situation favors Robert. Grandfather cannot run out of the room, nor there is a chance that Robert could miss his blow. Therefore, Robert swings his axe and Kills his grandfather. The grandfather dies slowly and Robert becomes successful.

THE CONFUSION

Robert kills his grandfather before he was married. This means that the Grandfather did not meet the Grandmother. Since they both did not meet and did not get married, Robert's father was not born in this world. This implies that Robert has not been born yet and doesn't exist at all. But that's not the case because Robert is alive and does kill his Grandfather.

This grandfather paradox can be seen from a logical perspective. The paradox is a logical contradiction that stems from changing the past from the way it is. If an event has occurred one way, there is no possibility for the event to have occurred a different way. Therefore, changing the past from the way it is results in contradiction and thus, changing past is IMPOSSIBLE.

Consideration of the grandfather paradox has led some to the idea that time travel is by its very nature paradoxical and therefore logically impossible. But recent studies has shown that it could be possible in future. In order to get more details about it, kindly visit my previous article TIME; The illusion of what we call NOW.

Now let us have a look at the GIF below-

What do you think about it. Really confuses your mind right? We could see the ball rolling along the edges. The rolling of the ball doesn't seem confusing but the path it takes certainly perplexes our mind. The edges of this triangular thing is made in such a way that it forms a PARADOXICAL path.

I would argue that our "logic system" is based on "time" is linear and one direction. If we change that, most of our logic won't be sound any more, hence the paradox.

I believe that too mate. Thanks for stopping by
