1926 was a huge year for quantum mechanics.
It's interesting how we tend to think of quantum mechanics as something new, but it's been almost a hundred years already!
The result was brilliant - his relativistic wave equation was just beautiful, but... He had no idea what these two extra components mean. Also, they didn't make much physical sense, as they had to have negative values of energy. However, his equation predicted the motion of electrons at any speed, so these extra components had to be there.
Loved this. Just so strange how math is tied to 'beauty' (neatness and economy) and to truth. So weird.
A quite readable post. I liked the history, and I like the funniness of the 'sound of silence' section.
