The Camera - Part 2

in #steemstem6 years ago

In our last discussion, we spoke about the evolution or development of the camera from the time it was discovered up till present day and the types of camera we have. Lets talk about the cameras we use nowadays, their functions, and the different types. This knowledge will help you decide which to buy for that special occasion or functions, or the use you have in mind.

Digital Cameras

These are the cameras that make use of digital sensors in place of films. A great advantage of sensors over films is that a sensor's sensitivity to light can be increased or decreased depending on the light situation and the types of subject the photographer wants to capture. The film has only one sensitivity (though this can be pushed to some extent with loss in quality of picture). Different films has to be used for different lightings meaning the photographer has to carry two or more cameras with different film speeds each time.

Types of Digital Cameras

  1. Compact Cameras:

These are very commonly seen around. They are small and can be slipped into the pocket. Their portability is a great advantage. They are mostly point and shoot automatic cameras and they get their job done with no fuzz. They have limited zoom ability and their sensor is small making very large professional prints from them almost impossible. But you can't beat them when it comes to candid shots.

  1. Advanced Compact Cameras:

These as the name suggests are compact cameras with advanced features. Some have extended zoom range. But the ability of the user to have some manual or semi automatic controls are their major advantages.

  1. Bridge Cameras:

These are larger compact cameras built like digital single lens reflex cameras DSLRs. They may have slightly larger sensors like Advanced Compact cameras. Their main plus is their lens zoom range which is very considerable. Some go from 18mm to as high as 600mm lens. They also have some forms of manual control and semi automatic control giving the user the ability to extend his photographic abilities.

  1. DSLRs (Digital Single Lens Reflex) Cameras:

    My DSLR: Nikon D60

These are the gold standard and usually carried about by professional photographers. They have full manual controls, semiautomatic controls as well as full automatic controls. They also have interchangeable lenses. This is something other aforementioned cameras lack. The versatility is such that these cameras are the favourites amongst professionals.

  1. Mirror less Cameras:

These cameras are new to the market and are becoming more popular by the day. They have everything the DSLRs have with the advantage of being light to carry and sometimes smaller in size than an average DSLR.

  1. Specialized Cameras: These are beyond the scope of this discussion. But suffice to say they are purpose built for particular function and use. Examples can be found in Medical works and in architectural work.

  2. Lest I forget, Smartphone Cameras are becoming popular too. They have the advantage of size and their use with mobile phones give them the advantage of portability. But their sensors are small. Much smaller than that of compact cameras. This makes them unpopular amongst the Professionals. But when you are aware of their limitations, they can be very handy. Their front facing camera lens are very good for selfies. In any situation or emergencies that need recording, you just bring it out and capture the event without a fuss. Quite useful.

So that's it for cameras. If there is any questions, or comments, please post such below and I will try to reply all. If you have to use a camera and don't know which to buy, just post it below as a reply and i will guide you to a right choice.
