Have you heard of a kid named Zion Williamson? Of course, you heard it for sure if you’re a basketball fan! Zion Williamson is taking over College basketball at Duke University and he’s said to be the next big thing in the NBA or we can probably say that he’s the second coming of LeBron James! Yes, Williamson has so many things in common with LeBron and there are some things that he’s much better than LeBron at his age. Well, if you haven’t heard of him or never watched him play, I’ll give you some of my insights about Zion Williamson. Let’s start!
Background
Zion Williamson was born in Salisbury, North Carolina on July 7, 2000. Early in his life, Williamson fell in love with the game of basketball. He trained early when he was in 9th grade and as he grows older, his abilities are getting better and better as well as his attributes. He is one of the most hyped players now in college basketball. He’s only 18 years old and already dominating college level. He plays for the Duke Blue Devils together with another top NBA prospect RJ Barrett. Let’s talk about RJ Barrett next time. Williamson is best known for his unbelievable leaping ability. He can fly in the air and he can even reach the top of the backboard. He plays the small forward and power forward position for duke but I think he can play all the positions.

In high school, Zion was named McDonald’s All-American and South Carolina Mr. Basketball in 2018. He was a five-star recruit back then and was ranked as one of the top high school prospects. Many teams are recruiting him even when he was only a freshman in high school. Teams like Wofford and Clemson are trying to recruit him early in his career. But Zion decided to join the Duke Blue Devils and joined the other two best prospects. Duke are very lucky to have Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett and Cameron Reddish at the same time and they will surely dominate college basketball during their tenure.
Williamson’s Physique
I’ve never seen such an athlete like Zion Williamson. If he plays in the NBA today, he will be the second heaviest player. He is standing at 6-foot-7 and already weighing 285 lbs. Basketball analysts describes him as a basketball freak or a once in a generation type of player because despite his heavy weight, his leaping ability and his quickness is remarkable. All those feat in one body is almost unstoppable and that was a god’s gifted physique. In my eyes, he’s like a next generation Charles Barkley which is stronger and much more of a great shooter. His quickness, speed and vertical can be compared to Barkley who can play as a small ball center and a dominant power forward.

Skillsets
We got our first look at Zion Williamson in his debut in the NCAA and he’s freaking awesome. I don’t know how he does it but he’s so quick and his body control is amazing. At his weight, he was still able to manage to control his body at top speed. His handles are under rated and from what I saw his dribbling skills are above average for his position. Zion can do everything. Take a look at his hesitation moves. It wasn’t just like an ordinary hesitation move but it fakes defenders nicely and it’s very effective because of his speed in using it. He’s good in selling it and his misdirection skills are very deadly.
Williamson’s insane leaping ability is very useful in every way. He utilizes it well getting rebounds, blocking shots and especially dunking. He had a lot of offensive rebounds and put back dunks in every game he plays. Even if the opponent boxed him out already, he can still get the ball up high behind his opponent without fouling. That is how incredible his leaping ability is. His timing is also unbelievable. I’ve watched him catch lob passes a lot and he’s so smart that even out of balance, he can still think and adjust his body motion to catch the ball in a perfect angle and position for an easy dunk.
Zion is so skilled that he can jump with one foot or two based on the situation. He always read the situation before doing an action and he’s so quick in doing that. He has a high basketball IQ that is so perfect for his God-given physical attributes. His footsteps are also remarkable. When attacking the basket, he always analyses when the defender is going to try to block his shot and he does that by making his opponent mistimed it’s defensive attempt by taking off early or taking off with a hop step. And with his unbelievable vertical, he sometimes jumps so far from the rim that opponents will not even think that he can reach the rim from that far distance so opponents will not have enough time to recover and defend.

I have one question, even if Zion is well defended and in front of you, Man how can you stop a guy 285 pounds flying in the air? If the defender meets him at the rim at top speed, I think nobody can stop this guy when he’s too close and the defender could just only wish Zion will miss the shot. It’s almost impossible to stop. When there are too many defenders around Zion, and he cannot get near the basket, he can always score in different ways. He can use the floater or some hook shots. He’s also good in doing those moves and you cannot say that it’s a less effective shot for Zion because he can do it consistently because of his smooth shooting touch.
Williamson is also an acrobatic player who is terrific in changing his shots in mid-air. His body control is impressive and it does not affect his sweet shooting touch. Another amazing feat I saw from him is his ability to score in traffic. I can proudly compare him to LeBron with his strength to finished in traffic. His finishing touch is ridiculous and I never saw a guy like him at that age.
And finally, What I love the most from this kid is his high level of passion and love for the game. He always let his emotions flows through the game every game and every play. He is so energetic and always let it out every single night. Not all top-level prospects have this kind of effort and passion for the game. I almost forgot that he’s also a good shooter from mid-range and from the three-point line already in his young career. And that what puts him away from any other young prospects. He’s in a completely unique level and that what make’s him a complete player who can truly be the next Big thing in basketball!
