Today in Boxing History | George Foreman and Ron Lyle Swing for the Fences!

In one of the greatest heavyweight slugfests of all time, both Big George Foreman and Ron Lyle tried to obliterate each other from bell to bell. It was the return of an older, and fatter George, but both his ferocity and boxing ring IQ seemed to be pertinent and forever.
Nobody could take the knack of fighting away from the Olympic Gold Medalist and one of the hardest punchers in (heavyweight) history. Ron Lyle found out the hard way how much of a legend Big George was, and just how determined he was to make the greatest comeback of all time.
Most recently Tyson Fury made the same kind of comeback to the sport of boxing, but even his trials and tribulations with social media and drugs can't quite amount to the time off and shape of Foreman in his comeback. George was already in his 40s competing at the highest level.
It was unreal that George could compete at all let alone with top 15 and top 10 heavyweights in the world. As a kid, I always knew George as the big friendly bald guy who sold grills.. I never knew his true greatness and miraculous comeback as both an athlete and special human being.
Gold Medalist, Champion, and a man who had fought the greatest of the greats... this is George Foreman. The legacy of this man was cemented far before his 90s comeback, but this era just further showed how great Big George was, and how great Muhammad Ali truly was...
The 70s era was quite different than the 90s era of heavyweight boxing, but it shows that twenty years does not transcend the greatness of previous eras. 20 years is nothing to the evolution and motivation of a primed athlete who had trained all his life to destroy the opponent.
Fighting never leaves you, and neither does power. Foreman vs. Lyle was old vs. young.. and the power of each man tipped the scales. Both men were rocked and dropped throughout the bout and in turn created one of the greatest slugfests in boxing history period!
It was a truly back and forth yet incredible matchup that pit fans to the edges of their seats, and as the fight progressed it slowly did seem that Foreman was going to survive and possibly win this uphill battle. Foreman had taken more licks and damage than he had ever in his career...
..but it never stopped him through the rounds he pushed forward. One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from George in regards to this fight: "He kept dancing around me so I had to shut the music off"... brilliant quote, and quite fitting for the knockout blow George landed to win the fight!
