What’s up basketball fans. Here we go again for another edition of the Top Draft Mistakes and today we will feature the Detroit pistons who made terrible mistakes in the past NBA drafts. Drafting the right prospect is very critical for every team as we all can’t say if a player will live up to the expectations or will he be a bust. There are a lot of teams who made mistakes and it’s always given every year. Even drafting lottery picks is not always guaranteed that you will get a nice player in that pick. When you have a top 10 pick, you can have a chance to land a potential top tier player or even a franchise player but sometimes it becomes a mess. Now, let’s take a look at the top Draft mistakes by the Detroit Pistons.
Darko Milicic
The 2003 NBA Draft, one of the best drafts in history or probably the best. With the second overall draft pick on their hands, the Detroit Pistons had the chance to draft players like Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh but they ended up drafting one of the biggest bust in NBA history which is Darko Milicic. This draft class was has produced too many top tier talents and the Pistons wasted that chance to get one of them and build a dynasty. Look at this, what if the Pistons drafted Melo, they could’ve won multiple championships with the strong core they already built. Adding Melo to that great core will sure win them a title. That will also favor Melo’s career because he could’ve won multiple championships in Detroit and his career might end up better. This will be one of the worst draft selection in history, not only in Detroit history but in the whole NBA.

Brandon Knight
Brandon Knight was the 8th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. Knight impresses the scouts because of his sweet handles and his ability to score while running the point and creating plays. But his development is not good as he failed to become their franchise player which the Pistons expected him to be. He failed to be an offensive monster for the team to give them big scoring nights. Detroit lost patience and decided to trade him away. Detroit wasted another chance and passed on top tier players like Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Jimmy Butler, Kemba Walker and Isaiah Thomas.
Greg Monroe
Greg Monroe was selected as the 7th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. At first, Monroe was a nice pick for Detroit because they got a dominant rebounder who can play in the post. But defense is the issue about him. He has a very low defensive IQ and that makes him a big problem for Detroit. And after the Pistons drafted Andre Drummond, Greg Monroe’s value declined as Drummond established himself as Detroit’s main guy. After that they decided to trade Monroe which is a good thing but they may be regretting drafting him because of the fact that they had a chance to get big time players like Paul George, Gordon Hayward, Hassan Whiteside and Eric Bledsoe.

Stanley Johnson
Another 8th overall pick was wasted in the hands of the Detroit Pistons as they selected Stanley Johnson in the 2015 NBA Draft. Johnson looks like a stud in the making with his offensive skills and his dominant performance in the summer league. Detroit thought that Johnson will be the new face of the franchise but it’s another disappointment for them. They saw Johnson as a potential two-way stud that can help them in both ends of the floor. But when step foot in the NBA court and play against the pros, Johnson’s offensive game has not been working. Maybe he lost his confidence because of some bad games and could not capitalized. The Pistons should’ve taken Devin Booker or Myles Turner instead of him.

Luke Kennard
The 2017 NBA draft is full of great young talents but the Detroit Pistons end up drafting another near bust. They selected Luke Kennard with the 12th overall pick but it seems like Kennard is just a below average player. If you watch his game, he looks like a second rounder and he does not deserve to be selected in the first round. There is no improvement in his game until now and the Pistons wasted the chance to get players like Donovan Mitchell, Kyle Kuzma, John Collins and Josh Hart. Any of that players will surely help the team if they drafted any of them but they end up taking a role player that wasn’t even contributing good numbers.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
Kentavious Caldwell Pope played well with the Detroit Pistons. He is a 3-and-D guy who can be reliable at times and he is now doing great with the Los Angeles Lakers. When KCP’s rookie contract expires, the Pistons did not do anything to keep him as they let him walk away and didn’t match any offer sheets he’s been offered. It’s not a great move because they just let the an 8th overall pick walk away with nothing in exchange. They should’ve just drafted players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, CJ McCollum or even Rudy Gobert.
