23-time Grand Slam Champion, Serena Williams who has had a tough path getting back to ATP reckoning is through to the second round of the 2019 Australian Open. The most successful Open Era titles winner, is currently playing where she won her 23rd Grand Slam title against her sister Venus Williams, in the 2017 edition.
Having powered through the tournament in Australia to win the title then, it was revealed days after the tournament that she had been a few months pregnant while on the courts. Despite having a seemingly safe delivery later that year, reports surfaced that Serena Williams had suffered life-threatening complications at child birth.

Serena Williams however pulled through, and consequent of her status as a mother, it took her quite a while before she could get back to playing the sport she loves so much, again.
Fast-forward to the 2019 Australian Open, and the 37-year old American Tennis Icon, is bidding to go the extra mile to achieve her 24th Grand Slam title right where won her 23rd major. In her first round encounter at this year’s event, Serena Williams played against Germany’s Tatjana Maria, and won in 49 minutes.
Serena Williams who said she has so many good memories of her time on the courts in Australia in 2017, and that the title was one of the most special of her career, given the unique circumstances. Her match against Tatjana Maria ended in two sets, 6 – 0, 6 – 2, and she is set to play against Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard in the next round of the competition.
As she bids to equal the all-time Open Era singles title record of 24 wins set my Margaret Court, Serena Williams will be weary of her health conditions, emanating from complications during her childbirth.

She was noticed to have worn compression stockings; of which reports suggests are meant to aid with her concerns over deep vein thrombosis. Although the seven-time Australian Open champ admitted that the condition is a bit common, she would however prefer to tow the side of precaution, in order to avoid further complications.
At the age of 37-years, time maybe running out for Serena Williams, in her bid to become the Women Tennis’ all-time great. But if her passion and zeal to win is anything to go by, then we could still see the brilliant and fabulous American show class in years to come, and for the rest of the current tournament.
Having been seeded 16th for the tournament, time will tell, if she can go all the way to win the title and add to her already bloated trophy cabinet, of 23 Grand Slam titles.

Where do you have Serena Williams on your list of the best tennis players in the history of the sport? I think she may be the G.O.A.T.
