Date: 4 – 13 August

Host City: London, United Kingdom

Main Venue: Olympic Stadium

The 2017 IAAF World Championships are the 16th edition and are scheduled to be held in August 2017 in London. On September 6, 2011, London unveiled its bid for the 2017 championships with the slogan “Ready to break records.” This was London’s fourth bid in less than 15 years to host the event. London was officially awarded the Championships by the IAAF, in Monaco on 11 November 2011, beating Doha to it.
There are over 2034 athletes competing from more than 200 countries. The United States has the most representatives with 167 athletes. Followed by host nation, Great Britain and Jamaica with 92 and 63 athletes respectively. Most of the Jamaican representatives are competing in the track events, unlike the rest that are evenly spread over track and field.

Russia won’t be competing as it is currently suspended from international competition due to a doping scandal. Nevertheless, 47 Russian athletes have been allowed to participate in international competition including many as “authorised neutral athletes.”

Stadium

The championships will be held in the former Olympic Stadium in Stratford, London, which has a capacity of 60,000. More than 660,000 tickets have already been sold, with a small batch still to be sold.

Bolt: One Last Time

This championship is to be sprinter Usain Bolt’s and distance runner Mo Farah’s last. The fastest human of all time will be taking part in his last 100m final on Saturday 5 August in the London Stadium. Seven days later on Saturday 12 August, he will be taking part in his LAST RACE EVER – the men’s 4x100 relay final. Mo Farah will also be competing in his last 10,000m race before switching to road racing.

Mascots

The mascots for the IAAF Championships and World ParaAthletics Championships were unveiled in April 2017. Hero the Hedgehog and Whizbee the Bee were revealed as the official mascots.
Organisers of London 2017 have confirmed that the event will smash records as the biggest World Championships in history. The championships are completely sold out on the opening night. So tell us, what country will you be supporting?
