Sergio 'The Phenom' Pettis

Brother to former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, and a member of the most prestigious striking camp in mixed martial arts, The Phenom is a rising star at the young age of 23. A few setbacks to Alex Caceres and Ryan Benoit early in his career have created a stigma in having too much faith in this fighter. Fortunately for the fans, Sergio has been back on track and is currently riding a 3 fight win strike; it is also important to note Sergio was up on all scorecards before getting finished in his only two UFC losses. The striking phenomena of the Roufus Sport camp have made champions of his bigger brother, and even now welter weight champion and fearsome power puncher Tyron Woodley. The evolution of Pettis' frame and overall striking prowess have elevated him into the top 8, as his last win was an impressive showout performance against top 10 flyweight staple John Moraga. Sergio will look to put on the performance of his life in a country not too South from his Milwaukee home...

Brandon 'The Assassin Baby' Moreno

A rising star on the professional circuit, Brandon Moreno made his stake to fame on the most current Ultimate Fighter Latin America series. He had a series of wars on the show that truly showcased his warrior spirit and impressive grappling ability. A lightning quick submission over Louis Smolka and a savage knockdown to choke finish against perennial flyweight gatekeeper Dustin Ortiz have shown Babyface to be a real threat to the division. His grappling is top tier and he indeed transitions like a black belt. His takedowns are savvy and Moreno's energy never seems to sap, his wrestling and jiu jitsu create an endless whirlwind of violence for the opponent. Moreno has chopped down every gradient of contender thrown in front of him, we will see if he has what it takes to break the top 10!

Breakdown and Prediction

This is an incredibly hard fight to call, and regardless of prediction, I think either man has a true 50/50 shot at winning depending on who controls the Octagon. Sergio will look to keep the fight standing, and Moreno will want to use chaos, and blend his power and wrestling to confuse and dominate the smaller Pettis brother. The elevation of Mexico City is absurd, and most fighters will gas out within 2 rounds. It will come down to heart and attrition to survive the climate, let alone the fight. If both men come in acclimated to the air and weather, then they will be on even footing stepping into the Octagon, and either man's skillset will determine a victor.
This type of match-up favors Moreno as it is, at the most basic level, striker vs. grappler...and the grappler always wins those. But, the experience, and skill level of evolving Pettis is nothing to be under estimated, and Moreno has not been tested for a true 3 round fight as he has finished lesser men before 10 minutes (each time out). It is a hard pick, but I must follow the heart when the head is confounded...

Sergio Pettis TKO Round 3
