Further discussion regarding @dandesigns86 2018 steem silver round submission.
I just got off the phone with our team at the mint regarding this design and further clarification regarding the limitation.
As mentioned before the costs to achieve a fully punched through or hollow coin as above would be prohibitive. It's not just that in would be expensive to do, it would be expensive to figure out how to do it. It's not currently within the mints capacity and although they would be willing to try it would involved lots of experimental dies, many custom blanks, retooling some presses and countless hours of R&D. This would be tens of thousands of dollars just to hopefully get it to work. So that's prohibitive entails.
They did present 3 other options
The first would be pretty much the design above just incorporating a frosted center steem logo. The only modification required would be to not have a "proof" rim. So the perimeter would just be have to be dull and slightly higher than the centre. This is simply because the high rim of the coin is requires to protect the centre features.
The other two options
Not sure if it's easy to amended them in concept @dandesigns86 but if it possible could you get us examples.
They are able to deep press an element approximately 1/3 the depth of the entire round and it would really stand out.
The two options are;
- Press the steem waves very deep (1/3 of the full depth)
Or - Press the circle around the centre steem waves very deep and let the steem waves stick out.

Obviously, this can't happen this year, but if this is something the community would like in the future, any chance to negotiate with the mint on the price to make a punch through happen?
Don't know how this was discussed, but it seems like their asking you to pay for something that would expand their capabilities in the future and something they may want to invest some money into as well.
Doesn't seem right for them to shove the cost off onto you when, in the long term, it seems like it would be a great benefit to the mint to have those capabilities.
I agree with this take, although I understand from a business perspective, you are going to be asked to pay for them to figure out how to do it, they are certain to add the capability to their catalog once they perfect it on this coin. Seems like if you (we) are paying for the process to be developed, either they should discount it, or you should earn a commission any time they use the process you paid for them to figure out.... shrug
In any event, I do think that considering building a year long fundraiser to cover the cost of something like this being an option next year. I think that is something a lot of people would be willing to pour upvotes into.

Still a great and classic design even if not punched all the way through. @dandesigns86 would be amazing if you could show a design with the 1/3 depth press, I reckon it would still be a very impactful design. Thanks @phelimint for researching for us, I am really enjoying this design and selection process of the 2018 coin. My vote is in so now it is just patience for the final result.

I'm gonna work on these two options of design and send them to you . I think they are both cool solutions that could improve the design. I will send them later when they are finished during the day

Great work Phil! I am in favour of incused steem waves — that’s what i thought it was all along! And my fave option of all 4...
What about black ruthenium for the centre circle to really make the steem logo pop out? And for the fully operational circuit chips lol. Oh and maybe a rotating centre like a fidget spinner

We know a guy you can send your's too, if you want the premium features. He just added lights to a hobo nickel! He's the same guy that could cut your waves out if you really want them like that!

Cheers but i would always be happy with the original article, my pockets are way too barren and fluff filled for any nonsence but i bet if this is the winning design some smart arse will have a cut out within a matter of weeks lol. A fantastic competition between the designs and even though this one stands out some of the other designs are spectacular, i struggled to only vote on 3 (2 steem coins for 2018? hmmmm?)
I think having the Steem waves pressed really deep would make for a very cool design. And really that is what we want right? A pretty wicked design that is affordable for us to have, not thousands of dollars worth of research and development.
