As the festive season draws near, there’s no better way to celebrate than with a bit of shiny inspiration! For the next 12 days, I’ll be sharing my very own 12 Days of Christmas Countdown, featuring the precious metals I’d love to find under the tree this year. This idea was first dreamt up by a long-time #silvergoldstackers community member and good friend, @silverd510, and it pairs beautifully with our annual #SecretSanta project, where members exchange silver and gold gifts anonymously. Find both original posts here 👉 silverd510 and the #secretsanta 👈 there.....

Originally designed to showcase a growing wishlist, the concept had one rule: the gifts should increase in value as the days progress, culminating on Day 12 with your "holy grail"—the ultimate unattainable piece. It’s a brilliant way to share your wish list and perhaps even give your mystery sender a nudge in the right direction. So, grab a warm drink, and join me each day as I unveil the coins, bars, and rounds I’m dreaming Santa will deliver this Christmas!

Day 6: A 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar – A Classic Coin with Rich History

For Day 6 of my precious metals wishlist, I’m reaching for a coin that’s steeped in American history and numismatic pedigree: the 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar. Although this iconic coin is missing from my collection, its legacy makes it a must-have for both collectors and stackers alike.

Minted with 0.7734 oz of 90% fine silver, the Morgan dollar boasts a design that has captivated enthusiasts since its inception. The obverse features a left-facing Lady Liberty, modeled after Anna Willess Williams, whose profile George T. Morgan—the coin’s designer—declared to be the most perfect he had ever seen. Encircling her are 13 stars representing the original colonies, along with the motto E. Pluribus Unum. The reverse complements the design with a bald eagle, clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. Beneath the eagle lies the motto In God We Trust, a hallmark of U.S. coinage.

The 1921 Morgan dollar holds a special place in history. It marked a one-year revival of the series after production had ceased in 1904 due to declining silver reserves. By this time, the original master dies had been destroyed, requiring George Morgan to craft entirely new ones. This final chapter of the Morgan series is unique, as it was produced just before the transition to the Peace dollar, commemorating the end of World War I.

What makes the 1921 Morgan dollar particularly appealing is its accessibility. While highly graded, pristine examples can command hundreds of dollars, circulated coins with a touch of history etched into their surfaces can be acquired at a much more affordable price. For stackers, the combination of its silver content, historical value, and iconic design makes it a fantastic addition to any collection.

From its roots in the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, aimed at restoring a bimetallic standard during a time of economic strife, to the fervor it inspired during the silver certificate redemptions of the 1960s, the Morgan dollar’s story is one of resilience and allure. As a coin collector and silver stacker, I’d be thrilled to have this piece of numismatic history find its way into my hands this holiday season.
