Milton Hershey Silver Round

Hershey is a name almost everyone knows. Milton Hershey's first successful candy company was Lancaster Caramel Company. The caramel business grew large enough to have 2 factories and 1300 workers. Lancaster Caramel Company was sold in 1900 for 1 million dollars.

The sale made it possible to build the Hershey Chocolate Company. Hershey had become fascinated with chocolate after seeing a German chocolate maker's exhibit at the World's Fair in Chicago. He bought the equipment, created his own milk chocolate formula, and mass produced his candy. His milk chocolate was the first nationally market product of it kind.

As the company grew it was moved to Derry Church, Pennsylvania which was renamed Hershey in 1906. Hershey wanted a real home town for his workers and he built one. The town included homes, a school system, public transportation, and a park. During the Great Depression Hershey started the "Great Building Campaign" to employ people. These buildings included The Hershey Hotel that he and his wife had been dreaming of. In addition he built the Hershey Industrial School for boys who had lost one or both parents. Today the school is the largest boarding school for needy children with more than 2000 boys and girls enrolled. Hershey endowed the school with his Hershey Chocolate Company stock. Chocolate is good and good comes from chocolate!

The list of candies Hershey produces is huge. The most recognized would probably be the Kisses and the bar that Hershey refers to as "The Great American Chocolate Bar".
