Silver of the Day #4 - This is Embarrassing
What does a stacker do when they have no money, but the Stakitus is raging? Get creative!
I headed down to the local bank with some of the rent money and got some of it exchanged for something that could help the sickness calm down.
To my surprise, the lady behind the counter didn't even blink when I asked for $200 in dimes! I was a bit embarrassed as there were a lot of people in line, but she brought out four trays of dime rolls. I couldn't carry them all in my hands, so she loaned me the bag.
Here's what they look like stacked up.
Another angle of the loot
Don't lose them though, that's how we're going to keep the roof over our heads next month!
After searching through 2,000 dimes in 40 rolls, here's what I found
So we got a total of ONE 90% silver dime, and one "5 Pence" piece from those 2,000 coins. The silver dime is worth around $1.20. As best as I can tell, the 5 pence piece is worth around $0.20.
If you include both coins, we had a hit rate of 0.1%... if you only count the dime, it was a hit rate of 0.05%. It took around two hours to search through all the coins, and I had to put another $0.10 dime into the roll so I could take it back, so my profit was around $1.10. Divide that by two hours, and I got paid around $0.55/hr. It's not going to pay the bills, but it's nice to know there are still some 90% silver coins out there, and it was a fun way to pass time while watching some tv with my wife.
Add it to the stack!
That's fun, I love coin roll hunting. Free silver is good silver.
I got dimes because I figured that I'd have better odds of getting silver ones since there are more dimes per dollar than quarters, but you also don't get much when you get a dime, so I may try quarters next to see what happens there. Or I may try half dollars.
You're right, free silver is the best kind of silver. :D
I would say, to quote the philosopher, "Son, you've got it bad, and boy, do you have it good." :)
That said, I think it's totally amazing and awesome that you did actually find something! That means it could be worth to do it again! And again! Free silver!
Now, you took two coins out of the rolls. One was a dime, and another was a five pence. You then put another non-silver dime back. Does that mean that the other roll you took a coin out of had the correct number of dimes in them, with one extra? I'm guessing that must be the case because otherwise you would be a dime short, right?
Ha ha, so true.
I was wondering if I actually would find something. I've heard that people have pretty well picked them over through the years. I would have liked to be around and of age in 1965 so I could have just gone to the bank and gotten silver coins more easily. That would have been a lot of fun. I could have built a stack in no time.
It could be worth it to do again. I'm not sure when I'll do it. I was thinking that I might try quarters and/half dollars just for fun. I could also see if they have Eisenhower dollars that are silver. That would be cool, although I think Ike's are rarer to begin with.
That's true, I had to put back two dimes. So technically I only earned around $0.50/hr for my work. I was considering the 5 pence a wash. I'll have to wait and see if someone from #ssg can tell me if it's worth anything. I didn't short the roll. That would be bad.
Now, Eisenhower dollars would be an awesome find.
I'm wondering what your wife thinks of all this stackitus. I'm sure she must have an opinion of it. I can see her being supportive and perhaps even a stacker herself. I could also see her being mostly tolerant and or rolling her eyes anytime you go, "My Precious!" Yes, you did just say that outloud. :)
I think "Don't short the roll" should become a saying that means "that would be bad." Let's see. "I'm glad I didn't hurl all over the living room rug." "Yeah, Dude. Don't short the roll."
They're not super rare (at least the non-silver ones), but it's not like you'll see them in everyday business. They're too big to just carry around, so people tend to leave them at home. Also, I think that people think they're silver, so they don't spend them.
My wife is a good sport about it. For a long time she had difficulty getting me presents as I don't care too much about stuff. Now that I have silver, she always knows what to get me. She doesn't want to stack, but she's supportive of me doing it. I don't actually spend rent money to get coins, so it's not an issue. Although, if all those coins had been silver I would have kept them, so in that case, I would have spent the rent money. ;)
Ha ha, I think that's a great idea! I wonder if we can get it to catch on.
