Coin of the Day 9-11-18steemCreated with Sketch.

I'm going to give you a secret on where we're heading next in this series. They're things that you likely haven't seen before. Some of them could be valuable, but all of them were used to denote value at some point. They're the underachieving younger siblings of coins. And we'll start that soon. However, before we do that, it's time for more silver.

The coin for today is old, and it's made of my favorite metal, silver! It is a "10 Centavos" coin from Mexico that was minted in 1905, so it's 113 years old.

It's toned and probably could use a good cleaning, but I'm going to leave it how it is. You can still see the eagle holding the snake on one side.

On the other side is what Numista refers to as a"Radiant Liberty cap."

Again getting my information from Numista, the coin is 2.5 grams and is made of .800 silver, so that means there are 2 grams of silver in the coin. At today's spot prices, that means the silver value of the coin is around $0.91 USD. There isn't more pricing information available there, so I looked at eBay and such, but there's no definitive price. In my opinion, things like this will only go up in value and significance, so there wouldn't be a hurry to sell it anyways.

Do you have any silver Mexican coins?

Not counting the Libertads, I have only one or two silver pesos.

Good for you! I have a small bag of pesos, but none of them are silver. You're the man, @ronaldoavelino, you've got silver coins from everywhere.

howdy sir noname! no I don't have any silver Mexican coins. Was I supposed to? I don't know anyone else who does either. well except you guys but I don't even know if ya'll are real so I don't know if that counts.

You don't have to have them, but you're more than welcome to if you so choose. Some of them have nice designs that are pleasing to the eye and provide security for the wallet if so needed. I recommend the current run of Libertads if you're so inclined. That's just my opinion though!

haha! that name cracks me up, it looks so much like libtards that people in steemit are always griping about! so what are those things, if I put them in google I'm sure they'll come up.

Not libtards. Libertads, as in the plural of Libertad which means liberty in Spanish. The newer ones look like this:

And the older ones look like this:

oh man that top one is great, how much are those? and does it matter much what kind of coin as long as it's silver? like in case of a collapse.

The top one is the newer version. You can get current year coins with that design. They're probably around $18-$20 each depending on the year you get.

do you recommend them over American Eagles is that what you're saying? because silver is silver right?

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. The Libertads actually tend to have higher premiums than the American Eagles, so you'll get more silver by purchasing the eagles. And Eagles have higher premiums (and sell values) than generic rounds, so it all depends on how much premium you pay to buy, and how much gets taken off when you sell. You have to figure out the "round-trip cost." (Buy price - sell price)

Other than the 4 Libertads, a handful of 1960s One Pesos (10%), two silver 10 Centavos, and a tiny 2.5 gold Peso. Not much else but would like to add an Onza one day.

You've got quite a nice collection of precious metal coins from Mexico. That's more than I have. Keep at it!

But still no Onzas, the last local show I went to the dealer had only some nice but pricey BU ones, I'd be happy with the cheaper circulated ones.

When you say "Onza" are you talking about the older Libertads? Like this one?

Just curious because some people call Libertads "Onzas" since Onza is Spanish for ounce... and it says Onza on the Libertads

Aye, I thought it best be to acquire thee original retro version of the Tad to go wit its more current version fer variety sake.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I'd like to get some of them as well. I would like to get the gold one, but a silver one would suffice. :)

Wow! That looks old. Where would one find one of those? I once got some old currency at a Burger King (Silver Certificates) I hear it's better to buy bars instead of coins due to the markup, still learning about all this.

This was given to me by a friend who doesn't really collect foreign coins, so they gave me a small bag of them. Most of them aren't made of precious metals, but they're fairly old.

In regards to "better" it all depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you want low markups, you can get generic rounds for a low markup. If you want a well-known design, Canadian Maple Leafs or American Silver Eagles are reasonable in terms of premium. If you just want to get as much silver as possible, 90% American Constitutional silver coins (dimes and quarters from 1964 and before) are normally sold at minimal markup. Lastly, 40% silver Kennedy half dollars seem to have no premium at all.

There's a start. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.
