Coin of the Day 11-10-18
Today's token is a 1984 Victoria, BC token. It's face value was $1 Canadian, but it has since expired. These tokens are issued to be of value for a limited time.
The obverse is a depiction of a lamppost with hanging flowers. It reads "VICTORIA B.C. CITY OF GARDENS".
The reverse shows the sailing ship the S.S. Beaver and reads, "VALUE 1 DOLLAR IN VICTORIA - EXPIRES SEPTEMBER 30, 1984". We were sooo close to being able to spend this!
I checked Numista for more information on this token, and it said that the token was made out of nickel-bonded steel.
It doesn't appear to have a frosted finish, so it looks like there were 121,000 of these made. It would have been fun to get one of the 24k gold ones! There were only 10 of those though.
Do you collect any coins that are only valuable for specific periods of time or in specific places?
no. lol. howdy sir noname! Someone out there probably has the 24K gold one in a bag of those old tokens and doesn't know it.
I wouldn't mind being the guy who finds them!
