Learning About Coins

in #steemsilvergold7 years ago (edited)

Hey steemians! Psychology suggests that we retain 90% of what we learn when we immediately share it with others. Being relatively new to this hobby, I naturally want to know more about silver, gold, and coins in particular. Today I learned about the anatomy of a coin, and want to share it with you!

Aside from books, much of today’s information on anything can be found on the worldwide web. The above is from the Gainesville coin dealer website and an excellent illustration of the anatomy of a coin. I found this to be very helpful in identifying the different “parts” of a coin. You can read more about it here I do want to thank our friend in the YT stacking community for pointing me and his viewers to this very straightforward and informative article.

It is important for me to learn the lingo and terms used around coins because it will be helpful in accurately describing coins and have a better understanding of coins in a more meaningful way.

It was great sharing with you today. If you like this post do not forget to upvote and follow me @silversaver888.

Thanks, @pit-bullion! I learned about the terms "device" and "field", and the difference between a "legend" and "inscription" as they pertain to coins.

Thank you maestra. FIRST!

Hey @sbsparts! So now I will be able to describe this coin you gifted me with, in a more meaningful manner!

Better late than never eh !!!! I forget 90 % of what people tell me !!!!! LOL

Yeah, like you forgot to upvote this post, my friend@mikegpo! or perhaps you did not like it, LOL!

The obverse and reverse are what messes me up the most. Thanks for the post. 👍🏻

It used to confuse me too, LOL! From the article I read..." A coin’s obverse is usually distinguished by a portrait or depiction of an important individual, or in the case of some older U.S. coins, the image of a personified Liberty."

The American Eagle is one of my favorite coins, but I didn't know the names for all the different parts of it. Now I know! I did notice that my AE that I carry with me doesn't have any Mint Mark in the indicated location. I wonder what that means. Hmmm.

The ASE is my favorite coin, and it forms the foundation of my stack. You ASE was minted at the Philadelphia Mint. All ASE's coming from there does not bear a mint mark. My carry coin is a Peace Dollar, and my conceal carry is a SMith and Wesson 637!

I went with The standard American Eagle as my carry coin. It's the same concept, but it's not rare, so I don't feel too bad that it might get a little dinged up as I flip it, or show it around. It's crazy to me that so few people have actually seen one of them. I get weird looks sometimes, but I love the coin, and I don't really care what they think. Glad to hear that I've found another AE fanatic! (And not the cheap clothing line.) Ha ha ;)
