Should I.......
Evening all.....
As most of you are aware, I am a hybrid stacker. I started out collecting coins years back and was a very serious collector. I had to sell off everything to help payoff a bad business venture with a partner.
Don’t get me wrong I love to stack silver for weight, but there is nothing like holding a piece of history that is still in amazing shape.
So this brings me to my post.
I’ve been eyeing several Capped Bust Half Dollars lately. I would like to assemble a Mint state set of each US Half Dollar. That happens to be a tall task since some are quite expensive. But I now think I’m determined.
So I was offered this 1823 Capped Bust Half Dollar, by someone that I used to be in a forum with. I’ve never bought from him before. It’s not that I don’t trust him, but I don’t know if the price is that good. The market on these coins is hot right now. They used to be very under valued, but have hit the collectors now by storm. People are paying top dollar for nice examples.
I have not seen this coin live yet. But the pictures he emailed me I will share with you. He is asking $800 for it, the book value for a high AU is between $500-$700 for this. In mint state the book value is between $1100 - $1500 up to MS63.
Now I just said the book value means nothing right now on these coins, and in my opinion the coin graded high AU from the picture. I can’t see how good the luster is in s picture.
So what do you think I should do?
It's a beauty. And yeah, holding a 200 year old coin like that is pretty special. As for advise, well, if you have the cash, and it makes you happy, have at it. 😎
I passed on the coin. Just didn’t feel right for the price. There are sooooo many undervalued and overlooked coins out there. I’m just picking away at them.
That is a really nice looking coin!!! If you have the extra cash and want to start your new set, I say DO IT!
I passed on it. Love that series but right now I’m buying up undervalued and overlooked coins. Been nailing it pretty good so far.
It's hard to pay that much without having it in a slab for me just to make sure I don't miss something that's really going to impact the value. Then again I don't have anything close to that value so hasn't been an issue for me yet

I decided to pass on it. While I’d love one in my collection, right now I’m scooping up undervalued and overlooked coins. I’m killing it right now.

It appears to have a "normal" 3... An "ugly" 3 would have increased its Value...
Too bad it wasn't Graded... It's so hard to tell from photos...

I wouldn’t have bought it without seeing it in person first. But I decided to pass on it. Thanks for stopping by
That is the reason why I only buy slabbed coins. I have not that deep knowledge and, to me, looking at a photo is an impossible task to grade it.
I have a very trained eye, I wouldn’t buy it without seeing it in person first. But I decided to pass on the coin.
Hehehe, my bestie is a hybrid stacker! Love the term! Beautiful coin, my friend! Congrats!
I think i coined the phrase.....no pun intended. Hope all is well with you bestie
I can see the appeal of holding onto a piece of history like this, it’s a nice looking piece but I imagine there is a good range around if you keep digging - excusing the pun lol

Thats what drew ne to coin collecting. Its holding history. You never know who had that coin before you. I passed on the coin though.
