Reconciling the Stack

Tracking My Stack

I am a spreadsheet nerd - and Yes I have every purchase* I have made of silver tracked in my spreadsheet.

While this may seem a bit over the top, it really helped at first. I got to compare premiums over spot from a variety of places and help me understand was a good deal, great deal, and when to walk away.

The problem

This was started when I was buying here and there, mostly 90% to start and a few .999 purchases. I built it out, but it was confined to the limitations of the current workbook, which was not idea and already oversized. I track purchases, sales, gifts and it all factors into my Dollar Cost Average of my Stack. Even though it was designed as less than ideal.

Not only do I have a poor design for self proclaimed Excel expert who lives in and loves spreadsheets, but I also have shotty records for someone who works in the finance field. These two combined have caused me to potentially have more silver than accounted for.

How did that happen.

As you can tell from some of my posts, I tent to aim for more vintage pieces when buying from various LCS's, in hopes of finding some profit to flip into more ounces. This is all fine, as long as you actually log the transactions. Last Christmas I went deep, 60+/- ounces deep of silver rounds. After researching for a day or two I realized I had some quality stuff and promptly went off to realize the gains. Since in my mind, this was a pure "investment" play - and not part of my core stack, I decided not to log it into my master spreadsheet, and where ever it was logged has been lost to the Excel file gods forever, saved in lost folder, in an unknown directory.

Someday, my kids will find it, but not understand what it represents. When I was cleaning the office one day, I just "put the silver away" not realizing it wasn't core stack material vs flipping silver.

The plan going forward - Reconcile the stack of course!

I think stackers fit into a couple of tracking categories, those who track and those who don't. As much as I love the idea of not tracking, its just not in my nature. I love spreadsheets and therefore must track it so I have an excuse to play in them more. Since this is going to be a project, and an excuse touch every piece of my stack again, I think it will be a fine time to photo graph each piece, or group of pieces. No I will not post a single photo of each Silver eagle I have, more likely each transaction line I create.

Creating a New Spreadsheet

As I grow in this community of stackers, I realize there is more complexity to this than originally thought. There are trades, and swaps, gifts, and barter. I need the ability to represent all of these accurately, so the fact I used silver to pay someone doesn't negativity impact my DCA. If I could have just went and bought them two ounces to give them vs taking from my stack, then its a gift and not a loss to my stack. This give me the opportunity to create something that makes sense to me and give me the flexibility to account for it "correctly" as I see it.

Time to go delve into #spreadsheetnation #spreadsheetlife and get building!!

Stack on!!

That reminds me.... I've got to update mine.

I will be digging through discord to find my transactions!

I am the same way @senstless. I have been keeping detailed records of silver and I enjoy going through spreadsheets. I like knowing what I paid for things and what I sell them for in the future to see how much money is made.

Exactly - one thing I think is missing when most people look up prices for stuff is where spot is. I am going to try to track the premium over spot along with total profit including silver price fluctuation.

Omg. I am not a spreadsheet person but have a silver spreadsheet. That I am also behind on and I also don’t count silver as a loss when I give it as a gift! Lol #spreadsheets4eva

Not going to count is as a loss, but I will pull the my purchase price out of my total cost of my stack not to distort my numbers.

I work with an excel already since 2014 and never miss a transaction. (Finance background of course)

I need add my flury of RCS purchases into my sheet and get it cleaned up. Will be interesting to see where it all falls. I am religious about tracking it, just realized my flipping caused bad records. I had one line for 10 different vintage/art bars, and then sold 2-3... way too messy. Going to go more granular.

Ugg, I hate spreadsheets,Now I know who to call!

You bet - I love a good challenge. Hit me up anytime you need!!

I love doing spread sheets when I can get the time!!

I find a reasons to build them - my wife hates how much time I spend between spreadsheets and steemit and discord
