# 52 - The Whale
Usually my posts are about groups of coins that display similar characteristics.
Today it will be different: I will show you only one coin. Why? Because it is a very special coin, it is the first 3-D coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint.
It is the 2017 $20 "Breaching Whale". It weights 31.39g with silver purity of 99.99% in Coloured Proof finish. Its mintage was only 7,500 and the Mint's issue price was CAD$117.95.
This is the Mint's presentation.
The reverse features a three-dimensional depiction of a breaching humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). The background depicts the waters off Canada’s coastline, where a lighthouse can be found on the headland rocks in the distance. The surface of the ocean alternates between soft waves and the smooth ripples caused by the whale’s sudden emergence. The whale itself was fashioned through a thermoforming process, the embossed whale stirs up foamy waves and a stream of ocean spray as it launches itself almost clear out of the water!
The obverse is the traditional picture of Queen Elizabeth II.
You can find this coin on Ebay today with prices varying from US$80 to US$150.

Very nice. I remember looking at that one at a store or Maybe post office, it is really cool. There's a few really sweet 3d ones they've made.
At the Post Office they sell coins at the same price that the Mint sells them. You can find these coins on Ebay cheaper.

The ripples are very clear on the coin, but I couldn't picture them well.
