# 323 - Marshall

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago (edited)

Continuing the Modern Commemoratives Dollar series, we will present you today the 2005 "Marshall" graded by PCGS PR70 DCAM.

All coins of this series weight 26.73g with 90% silver purity. They were issued in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated finish.

They will be presented in the order they were minted.

This coin was issued to commemorate the 250th anniversary of John Marshall's birth. He served as the fourth Chief Justice of the United States from 1801 to 1835 and most notably established the doctrine of Judicial Review, asserting that the Supreme Court has the authority to overturn an Act of Congress if it exceeds the powers granted in the Constitution.

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Chief Justice John Marshall. This was designed by John Mercanti, based on an 1808 painting by Charles-Balthazar-Julien Fevret de Saint-Memin.

The reverse of the coin features the old Supreme Court Chamber within the Capitol.

A total of 196,753 coins were minted in Philadelphia. The issue price was U$39.00. The actual price is around U$125.00 in this grade.

It is the first time that I see a Judge of the Supreme Court on a coin. Am I right ?

Yes. At the US Mint site they say exactly this. The first Chief Justice displayed on an American coin.

As a commemorative lover, I have all the Modern American commemoratives, $1 and $.50 and I have been showing them. If you go back, usually two articles separate them, each time.

I’ll check it out? Also, how do you like Steeve?

I started yesterday, so I have not experience yet.
