# 290 - Buffalo
Continuing the Modern Commemoratives Dollar series, we will present you today the 2001 "Buffalo" graded by PCGS PR70 DCAM.
All coins of this series weight 26.73g with 90% silver purity. They were issued in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated finish.
They will be presented in the order they were minted.
This coin was issued to commemorate the recently opened National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) of the Smithsonian Institution.
The obverse and reverse designs for the Buffalo Silver Dollar are taken from the 1913 Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel with some additional inscriptions added to the reverse.
The obverse of the coin features the profile of a Native American facing right.
The reverse of the coin depicts a full figure of the American Bison or Buffalo.
A total of 272,869 coins were minted in Philadelphia. The issue price was U$37.00. The actual price is around U$385.00 in this grade.

I love the Buffalo Nickel and this coin is an amazing homage to it.

It is really very beautiful, like the original one. Great idea of the Mint to reissue it in silver.
I was hoping the United States would go back to some of their older Coin Designs... I'd love to buy a roll of brand new Buffalo Nickels... Or how about a roll of brand new Mercury Dimes...??? It seems to me that the New Coins could be made the same way as Nickels...
I love the buffalo nickels, but I don't think that they will remint them as circulating coins. It would be a first time...
I would sure like to see it, as part of the Reset...
