in #steemsilvergold7 years ago (edited)

Continuing our series of Historical Names, we will present four coins issued by the US Mint on its Modern Commemorative series.

All are $1 coins, with 90% silver and the weight is 26.73g.

The first is the 2000 "Leif Ericson", issued by the US Mint in cooperation with Iceland. The program included this silver dollar and an Icelandic 1,000 kronur coin. Each coin depicted Leif Ericson, marking the 1,000th anniversary of his discovery of the New World. The reverse depicts a Viking ship with Leif Ericson at the helm.

The second coin is the 2003 "First Flight", issued to celebrate the centennial of the first manned flight. The reverse shows the Wright 1903 Flyer.

The third coin is the 2004 "Thomas Alva Edison", that marks the 125th anniversary of the famous inventor’s successful demonstration of the electric light bulb. The reverse features an image of Edison’s first light bulb.

The fourth coin is a 2004 "Lewis and Clark", issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the famous expedition of the two explorers. The reverse features the Peace Medal. The Mint issued a series of $.05 circulating coins to commemorate the same event. See: https://steemit.com/steemsilvergold/@ronaldoavelino/21-the-westward-journey

Nice coins. Where do you get these numismatic coins? Do you have a local dealer in Brazil or order them online?

I ordered them online and sent them to a friend's home in USA. I used to travel to USA about twice a year and then I would pick up the coins. I have been doing this for years. Now I buy them online in Canada and I send them to my daughter's home.

Thank you for sharing your interests here. I've only been interested in coins seriously since I learned about them about a year ago. So much to learn.

Yes, we have much to learn and we need a good library, where we can study what we need to know about the coins that interest us. There is an old saying among numismatists: "Buy the book before the coin". That way you know what you are buying and cannot be deceived.
