# 11 - Sacagawea Dollars

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago (edited)

Let's talk about one more American Government try to make its citizens use a dollar coin. The Morgan, Peace, Eisenhower and Susan B Anthony dollars never were popular in utilization among the Americans.
The Sacagawea Dollar coin was first released for circulation on January 27, 2000 with the purpose of honoring Sacagawea, the Shoshone woman who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their expedition to the Pacific Ocean.
It was the same size and weight of the Susan B Anthony dollar, but was golden in color. It weights 8.1g and has a diameter of 26.5mm. Its composition is 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel.
The coin was heavily promoted and nearly three-quarters of a billion Sacagawea dollars were struck for circulation. After an initial wave of enthusiasm, demand for the dollar coins dropped and mintages fell to 5-6 million coins per year from 2002 on.

In 2009, the United States Mint began minting and issuing $1 coins featuring designs celebrating the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to the history and development of the United States.

The obverse is the same shown above (Sacagawea face). I will show you now some reverses. 2009 commemorates the contribution of Native American women to agriculture, 2010 features the Hiawatha Belt with five arrows representing the five original Nations and 2011 depicts the hands of the Supreme Sachem Ousamequin Massasoit and Governor John Carver, symbolically offering the ceremonial peace pipe after the initiation of the first formal written peace alliance between the Wampanoag tribe and European settlers in 1621.

2012 features a Native American man and horse in profile with horses running in the background, representing the historical spread of the horse. 2013 commemorates the Delaware Treaty of 1778. Its reverse design features a turkey, a howling wolf and a turtle, symbols of the clans of the Delaware Tribe and a ring of 13 stars to represent the Colonies. 2014 depicts a Native American man clasping a ceremonial pipe while his wife holds a plate of provisions, including fish, corn, roots and gourds. In the background is the stylized image of the face of William Clark's compass, displaying "NW" for "northwest."

2016 commemorates Code Talkers from World Wars I and II. 2017 commemorates Sequoyah, a Cherokee silversmith whose creation of a Cherokee Syllabary made reading and writing in Cherokee possible.

Unfortunately the Americans continue to use dollar bills and the effort to change it for a coin was in vain. Why did I say "unfortunately"? Please comment below what you think.

Here in the uk they just took the old £1 notes out of circulation and replaced with a £1 coin. so you had no choice. Just recently they replaced the coin with a new design and the old one you can no longer use as tender in shops. here canada is now gonna be removing notes from circulation after passing some bill. all fiat though these days unlike coins of the past and no silver in ours now.

Why do you think they are replacing the notes with coins ? Because a $1 notes "lives" only for about 18 months while a coin "lives" for 20 years. So, for the government, the cost of coins is far lesser than the cost of notes.

Now we got polymer notes £5 and £10 so £20 be next out as they last longer as well. won't be long till it's all just electronic deffo by 2050

In Canada all the notes are plastic and the coins go from 5c to $2. I will give you a hint why in USA they still use the $1 bill : who is the supplier of the banknotes to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing ?

I see 2 possible reasons for your use of the word "unfortunately" (aside from the lifespan of paper vs. metal, which you have already pointed out).

  1. All the paper used in the production of US paper money comes from one single supplier: Crane. I have to believe that there are some back door dealings and political motivations for choosing this supplier, but I don't know any details.

  2. Paper is not worth anything in and of itself. Coins at least have some value in the metal used.

You have just received an A+. Totally correct. Someone told me that Crane belongs to the Kennedys, but I don't know for sure.

That may very well be true but people continue to choose to use paper dollars over coins as well. Dollar coins have been available many times in many forms but for some reason people still seem to prefer the paper dollars. The coins don't circulate as much. True, the government could force the issue if they really wanted to. Personally, I think paper money is more convenient for larger denominations but a dollar coin is preferable to a paper dollar.

That's a good point. Convenience plays a big role. That's why the autopay mobile apps are booming now. Just think when cryptos get more user friendly and accepted by merchants. It'll be a whole different world.

That's the big thing standing in the way for crypto. It depends entirely on you to keep it secure, not a bank or some other entity. It is very, very easy to lose huge sums of money if you are not careful, not only to theft but by losing your keys/password, not making backups, or just by accidentally typing a wrong number. Until there are very convenient ways to take care of these things, crypto will not achieve mainstream success. Convenience cannot be underestimated.
