Niue Dollars

What did you do during topography lessons at school? Did you pay attention, did they teach you something about the country of Niue?

Well, for me this was new or I wasn’t paying attention during my school lessons, fact is I never heard of this country until this weekend.

Some info:
Niue happens to be an island in the Polynesian sea near New Zealand, Tonga and Samoa. The country/island has less than 2000 inhabitants and is 260 square kilometers big. Queen Elizabeth is the head of state and its capital city is Alofi.

The island was first discovered by the great British seafarer Captain James Cook although he could not land there because of the hostile inhabitants.

What has this subject to do with Silver you may ask?

Well, I bought these two bars/coins, minted by Scottsdale mint. They look like regular 1ounce bars but like a coin they have a face value of 2 Dollars.

Looking at Wikipedia, Niue is using the New Zealand Dollar as it currency, so I wonder, are these coins real money or is it fake?

After doing some research I found out that the coins are real and indeed minted by Scottsdale in 999 Silver, with a mintage number of 350.000 and are having a denomination of 2 New Zealand dollars. So they are legal tender in Niue.

So you see, with stacking or collecting you are also learning something about history and geography!

I like the coins, they are very detailed and are beautifully finished and produced by Scottsdale Mint.

Enjoy!
