925 hand poured bar for @jbcoin

in #steemsilvergold7 years ago (edited)

Hello all, a little while back @jbcoin asked if I would pour him a bar with his 925 scrap. I haven’t poured Sterling that much but I was up for the challenge. Here is what he sent me.

I got it all chopped up and in the furnace let’s get this started.

What I did first was poured it into little bars to try and clean some of the impurities from the metal. After pouring the little bars I tumbled them. Here’s what they look like.

Then I made up a mold that I routed into Oak.

After burning out the mold I poured the bar again and this is what we came up with. It had a lot of impurities on the back of it.

I wasn’t happy with the last one so I wanted to try It again. The first pour in the wood mold can get a little crazy sometimes some shot flew out of the mold.

Let’s take a look at the first pour out of the last mold. This is the first time I got lines on the first pour. See how it is starting to look cleaner.

This is the last pour so we put it all in there. The back still looks a little messed up but I will fix that right up.

After cleaning it up this is what we came up with 10.2 Sterling bar that I am comfortable to put my name on and stamp 925 on.

That's so awesome to see the process man. I was surprised just how great it came out in the end, after the early photos. Do they impurities just burn off, or is there an additional process that is required.

I melted the metals and put borax in it. some of the impurities stick to the borax. Then I also just clean the junk off the top. I did this about 4 times then added a little 999 to it. It cleaned up nicely but its still has impurities in it.

So awesome!! And @jbcoin is a great guy!!!

I love it!!!

I (@em3) still need to get ya to make me a gator bar sometime!! I'll be in touch after I take 2-3 weeks break from steemit (personal time).

Peace
