When Do You Take a New Series Seriously?!?

in #steemsilvergold7 years ago

Hey, #SteemSilverGold community! About a week ago, I saw a post from @kevin-grootaers about a new Czech Republic 1 oz Silver Lion Coin that he found. It is the 1st coin in a new series called the the "Czech Nationhood" series. Now today, @vicspics told me about another new series of Barbados coins. JM Bullion states this is 1st release of a 4-coin series.

So my shiny loving friends, how do you decide to buy a coin in a new series? Do you just pass on all new series because there are just too damn many already? What factor is the most important to you?

  • How many were minted?
  • Who minted them?
  • Is it government backed?
  • What country is represented on the coin?
  • What is the price over spot?
  • What is the size of the series (if announced)?

I bought one of the Czech Republic coins due to its low mintage of 10,000. I could not do any more than one as I don't necessarily think this coin is going to fare well. The lion looks cool, but the obverse says its from Niue. So let me get this straight, it's a Czech Republic coin from Niue? Also, why are there so...many...Niue...coins?!? They may have more different coins then citizens on the island!

The Barbados coin has a larger mintage of 30,000 but is a bit cheaper than the lion. It is minted by Scottsdale Mint, which is oh so close to Barbados. I feel the design is a bit plain and isn't making me rush to order one.

There is a similar coin to the Barbados coin. The Cayman Island also has a first year coin by Scottsdale Mint. This coin has not sold out yet and it has been out for a while so I also don't see this coin doing anything spectacular.

Enough of my blabbering. Enjoy the pretty pictures and tell me how you feel about new coin series

The Barbados Dollar is a badass looking coin. I would like to have at least one... will be keeping an eye out fromda spots i go.
Thx for post!

Everyone seems to like that Barbados dollar. I have a feeling I am going to break down and get one.

Break down a few times... 😜

I tend to go for new series from already popular mints, are the main ones if you no what i mean. I would also get lean toward buying coins that will be released every year and away from sets like 4-6 coins released over 2-3 years.
Great post

The lion and shield is very cool, could do without QE II on the obverse though!

As far deciding what to collect, I haven't really thought too much about it. There's not really any coin I've seen and thought that I had to have each release of it. I think it might be cool to put together an album of American Silver Eagles from 1986-present/future, but as far as other series I just kind of buy coins as they interest me without planning to collect the whole set.

I don't have many coins where I am worried about collecting a set. I would say Kookaburras are my favorite series, but I don't feel the need to collect them all.

This is weird. The Queen's head on one side and the Czech republic on the other side. Is it a printing error?

As for collecting coins you have to decide if you are doing it for:
The beauty, or
The numismatic value, or
The bullion value,

Most new coin issues have no numismatic value. If you want an investment, you should either buy an old and rare coin, and hope it will become sought after by other collectors, or a bullion coin, and hope that the gold price goes up.

For something a bit different, you could look at buying a fully loaded Casascius coin which contains one bitcoin and one bitcoin cash. It trades at quite a premium to the BTC price, but it's rare, hard to find, part of modern history, and the underlying BTC value is doubling every 3 or 4 months.

If its an error, it is too new to have been corrected. I don't flip coins and I don't buy a lot, so usually I don't buy more than one or two of any particular coin and for a combination of the 3 reasons you cite. I usually just buy new bullion.

I have never even heard of a Casascius coin and haven't delved too far into the crypto space. I'll take a look.

The trident on the Barbados coin looks awesome! But plain old generic is more exciting for me lately. Maybe with a few nice pieces mixed in.

I do like the Trident. I think if I end up placing an order in the near future, I'll pick up one, but I am not excited enough to base an order around it.

Thanks for writing a post on this. I'm still debating (leaning towards yes) as I'm a fan of Greek Gods etc which I'm guessing the trident is for. Also a plus for me is any coin that doesn't have a big queen's head on it. I'll go out on a limb and call it sold out within a week.

Thanks for telling me about the Barbados coin. I think it will still be there for more than a week. We'll see

I pick a coin like i would pick a horse in a race, yea there are alot of them but some are winners, the best bit is if you pick a loser you dont screw up the betting slip and throw it away, it will always have the silver value. If that lion had a Czech face value then it would be a sure winner but niue and the queens head on a supposed Czech coin cheapens it.

I don't buy a lot of any particular coins, so if I pick the occasional loser, then the good picks should help balance them out.
